500ml bottle from BeersOfEurope. O yes! From first sip this is splendid. A good, thick nourishing stout, smooth and velvety, yet full of life and rough edges. packed with roasty flavour - good dark bitterness and thrilling smooth sweetness. A harmony of flavours poised and balanced like a clean shaved ballerina posing on a tightrope. There is nothing wrong with this. Full bodied, dark, lactic notes adding sparkle and interest. Mmmm. Best bloody stout I’ve had in a long, long time - probably since Swale Oyster Stout. Great.

Bloody hell. Now this, is a good stout. Pitch black with an impressive tan head. Perfectly carbed. Stunning complex aroma of barley sugar, thick chocolate malt, some port and an excellent earthy note in the background. Rich dark chocolate flavour with a ton of coffee and tar and rubber and all things stouty. Superb bitterness in the finish. Everything is done to perfection here. The palate is perfect. Thick and creamy yet instantly washed away by the carbonation, leaving a tangy dryness that leaves me wanting more. Bloody good bottled English stout. Hats off to Wagtail.

Bottle bought at Williams Deli, Nailsworth. Jet black with a thin, but tight, tan head. Big aroma of roasted malt, caramelised brown sugar and bitter chocolate. Full yet smooth mouth feel, with heaps more chocolate, brambles and charcoal. The slight sweetness at the start slowly gives way to an earthy, bitter finish with a touch of spritzy carbonation. Excellent all round.

UPDATED: AUG 26, 2010 Bottle.As Black Shuck.Black as the elusive sh-a-a-a-dow with a small head,smells smokey dark and deep,taste is similar with some bitterness,dark chocolate,tobacco,wood and coal fire smoke.

Bottle at home ... Thanks to FIn for pointing me at this one ... Deep solid black with short lived head ... roast coffee with hint of tobacco ... Ohh bitter roast coffee malts ... bit too bitter for me ... Very solid stout ... behind the bitterness is lots of smooth roast malts ... good body ... and a simple but rounded stout.

Bottle, from the Dodgy Deli on the Cowley Road in Oxford. Deep black, with brown highlights, small layer of light tan foam that lingers in a sticky ring. A musky deep earth aroma: smokey chocolate, barn wood, and most interesting, that fine pungent smell of rolling tobacco. Fin and Loz mentioned the rolling tobacco, and that really is it. Gently tart roast flavor, chocolate, woody bitterness, and more tobacco. (Maybe more Latakia in the flavor.) Fairly light mouthfeel, but works just fine here. A bit of lingering menthol. All parts working together, a mature and balanced beer. Excellent.

Bottle, branded Black Shuck Stout. Very dark, almost completely black with a small, beige, creamy head. Smokey coffee aroma, vague meat note, quite uncompromising. Full smokey flavours with hints of coffee. Despite some malty sweetness, this is a rough and honest man’s beer.

Bottle picked up from the Dodgi’ Deli’, Cowley Road, Oxford, 13-03-08 Very dark brown pour with a small tan head. Wonderful aroma, Loz pointed out that there was rolling tobacco how right she was it smelt quite sublime and I don’t even smoke and never had done, there were also some gentle woody notes. The taste is simplicity itself wonderful gentle roasted flavour’s nice coffee touches, this isn’t laden down with sweet malts, it just tastes very good, down to earth proper stout. I’m sure this sort of stout is very much in keeping with how stouts used to be, it’s simple, honest and bloody marvellous.

Bottled. A black coloured stout with a decent but short-lived tan coloured head. The aroma is very burnt and smoky, oily and fishy. A very roasted, burnt flavour with good coffee notes. A very good Stout.

Bottle from the Little Beer Shop. Pours a thick black with a medium sized but dense looking beige head that scatters along the wall of the glass. Fairly upfront aromas, this stout boasts a smoky quality also with coffee and dark chocolate alongside roasted malt notes and perhaps the slighted hint of raisin. Full flavours from the beginning; the roasted malt comes through in the flavour, as does some of the coffee element, with an ocassional sweetness from somewhere. The bitterness is rather pronounced and there’s good hoppy finish, even if a touch short. Quite thick and smooth on the palate - this stout goes down very nicely indeed. Gorgeous, and local to boot!
