COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Rich and dark, yet surprisingly quenching. Brewed with a variety of dark roasted specialty malts to give a full range of flavours. Chocolate and coffee with maybe a hint of licorice. The hops used for both flavour and aroma are the famous East Kent Goldings, imparting a raisiny, fruitcake character to the palate and a warm spiciness to the finish.

My experience seems a little different from others! Dark body with decent tan head. Spicy zesty sharp nose, then subtle roasty notes. Not what I was expecting! Strongly carbonated. Similarly astringent and sharp to taste. Doesn’t really have a full bodied taste, its rather light. Nice roasted taste coming through late. A surprising beer from the dark body to zesty citrus aroma to the initially sharp then roasted taste. Not an every day drink but very interesting!

Tasted 7/2/2014. Draught at Waiheke Island Brewery, NZ. Poured a translucent deep ruby red colour with a light tan collar that produced poor lacing. Carbonation moderate with small bubbles. Aroma of nice sweet coffee dominates and not really anything else. Taste of sweet caramel malt, slight chocolate on the after-taste, and very slight bitterness. Light body, lighter that I was expecting. Smooth, light, clean with a long slightly bitter finish. More a dark lager that an ale or porter. Quite nice but a bit thin in the body.

Dark ruby brown with fluffy tan head. Chocolate, fruity coffee and redcurrants on the nose. Medium mouthfeel with roast barley, dry coffee and a long malt finish.

330ml Champagne style brown bottle purchased on Waiheke Island near Auckland NZ. Pours dark brown with a small tan head of minimal duration and lacing. Nose is sweet dark toasted malts with dark chocolate and mild coffee notes. Flavour is similar but there is a stronger than average hop bitterness to the finish (they now use NZ grown Styrian Goldings) which earns bonus points. Body is medium-light but with a somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Nicely balanced and easy to drink.

Good looking dark ale, nice colour with a smallish head. Aroma is full of roasty chocolate and some coffe notes. There are some good roasty flavours too but it falls short here for me. The palate is thin and feeble which really lets this beer down. If there was some more weight and mouthfeel here this would be a very good beer. As it is, its just "alright".

Wonderful caramel nose. Unfortunately it all goes down hill from there. Thin, watery palate, stunted flavour of caramel and fruit. Quite a let down after my initial sniff.

Bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with a moderate tan cap. Roasty chocolate aroma. More chocolate than roast on the palate, with definite fruity undertones. Fairly light, but in no way watery, with a dry mildly bitter finish. A nice little porter.

Tasted at the brewery, dark with hints of red and a tan head. Smells of toasted malt with hints of chocolate. Taste is malty which is quickly followed by a roasty dryness.

Bottle, pours a dark brown with a foamy beige head. A very metallic aroma with just a touch of maltiness. I wonder if there is something wrong with this bottle, as drinking it, it has that strong metallicness again, with an unfortunate herbal sourness. I will have to update my rating on a second tasting.
