I has this at Horse Brass in Portland and drove to the brewery in Stevenson WA to buy some. This awakens you with a cherry smell. One the first sip the cherries and coffee roll around your palate. This beer finishes as wonderful as it starts. This is one of my favorite stouts that I have ever had. Too bad they only have kegs and don’t bottle. If in the area, this beer is a must try for dark beer drinkers

(Draft: Horse Brass Pub in Portland, OR) Oh man, when they say black cherry, they really mean it. The nose is massive black cherry, smelling a lot like Marachino cherries, or the inside of chocolate covered cherry candies. I really can’t smell anything else to this stout, that’s how strrong and dominating the cherry aroma is. Quite a strong sweet cherry flavor as well, though there’s almost nothing that will beat a dark, bitter, roasty, coffee maltiness into submission, so the cherry is more in balance here, and actually, quite a nice enhancement to the traditional dry stout flavor. Medium-to-full bodied, lightly carbonated on the palate, with a very long-lasting roasty finish. The color is black as pitch, fully opaque, even at the edges. And the sizeable tan head slowly settles to a thick, bubbly ring, leaving some patches of lace on the glass. Though I couldn’t drink more than one glass of this beer, it’s very interesting, a wonderfully unique and finely crafted beer. Highly recommended.

Black. Whispy head. Nice, wonderful cherry nose. Lots of cherry iin the moouth, but not too much sweetness, just cherry essence. I would never have guessed 7.2%. Semms a little more porter-like then stout, but a really nice beer none-the-less.

On tap at Rose and Raindrop. Pours an opaque black with a small light brown head. Awesome aroma of black cherry soda, roastiness and a hint of smoke. Flavor has notes of roasted malt, chocolate and the perfect amount of non-artificial-tasting cherry. The cherry flavor is there but it’s not overdone, no fruity sourness either. Pleasantly sweet, some hoppiness in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium with subtle carbonation. Overall, very nice beer.

This one was great. Having worked in a cherry orchard for five summers, I know the fruit. This one poured with a small head, and had very little coloring to it. It’s cherry without tasting like cough syrup. Smooth malt finish. Nice.

On draught at the Rose & Raindrop. (March 2005). Black color with medium lacing head. The aroma is cherries! They overpower the malt and bitterness but some perfume comes through. The flavor is cherry, some coffee, melon, low bitterness and mild sweetness. It tasted like a dark-chocolate covered cherry. Nice beer.

Black with a thin tan head. Smells like cherries and tastes like cherries. Thin palate with a pleasing aftertaste. Its nice but too much like cherries for my taste.

Tap. Nice black color. Off-white head and good lacing. Nice cherry and roasted malt aroma. Medium bodied. Flavor tended to be more on the stout side of things with chocolate and coffee being dominant with a pleasant cherry intrusion towards the finish. Decent stout with a great fruit balance.

UPDATED: JUL 21, 2007 First tasted at the Rose & Raindrop in spring ’05 and I hated it. So I gave it a re-sample at the brewpub in Stevenson. Basically black. Black cherry soda smell. I sure could go for a Montreal smoked meat sandwich right now. Taste....gak...gong show of very bitter patent malt and sugar sweet robitussin cherry. Fucking awful.

On tap at the Horse Brass Pub in Portland. Pours black with a small brown head. Tons of sweet dark cherry aroma, not very tart, just syrupy sweet. This brew was very thin on the palate, almost like a porter. Not very much roast to this, light chocolate flavor with a sweet chery start then a big bitter finish. Good for a fruit beer, but bad for a stout.
