harlequinn (2746), Tacoma, Washington, USA Feb 28, 2006 This is as good as they come. Wonderful texture on the palate, full of peachy fruit flavors, that are very layered, ranging back and forth between the sweet malt character and the sweet sweet hoppiness. Brown sugar, and cinnamon with an almost wine like finish. BBB63 (3795), La Porte, Indiana, USA Apr 6, 2006 Served in a snifter and at near room temp: Poured a beautiful mahogany hue with an initial fizzy head which laid to a small ring and some oily coating on the glassware
The nose detects heavy carmelized malt, candi sugar, and a hint of molasses at the forefront followed by notes of ripened apricots, fig, and starfruit. Spicy esters of anise and clove also come about for a visit, even some smoked peated malt come out to play, COOL!
The taste starts extremely malty and a bit of the olde oxidation that I ENJOY in a traditional English styled barleywine but then under it all is a noticeable smack of PNW hop character of bitter bite and cloves. Throughout it all is that underlaying fruit twang. Finishes with some alcohol warming but not really too powerful. I really dig the flavor profile once my palate adjusted.
The mouth feel is oily and lush but a hop bite kept it refreshed.
Overall a tasty hybrid, part traditional and part new world PNW. It works for me, get ya some. 11026 (1886), USA Nov 1, 2005 Tap at brewery. Chestnut colored concoction with a light opacity. Orange-red colors when backlit. Modest off-white to tan head fades to a ring and leaves spotty lacing. Layered aromas, plummy, figs, malt, perhaps slightly oxidized. Medium bodied with a lower carbonation level, served rather cool, flavors and aroma pick up as the beer warms. Malty and plumlike flavor with a hop bitterness that balances nicely. Menus states this is 22 months old so I assume this was brewed in ’03. BuckeyeBoy (1129), Boise, Idaho, USA Jun 4, 2007 On tap at BrewPub Pours out a Amber topped with a very small head. Very sweet aroma. A great BW. Aubrey (2592), Denver, Colorado, USA Mar 16, 2006 Hand-bottled from tap: Deep ruby-red and brown. Hints of bubblegum in the nose. Sweet malts with a big and cozy toasted quality. Interlaced aromas of Belgian candi sugar and grassy hops. Lesser notes of dark fruit. Also, sweet and ripe fruit skins, such as plum, apricot and pear. Healthy bitterness (plants, flowers, grass), especially in the aftertaste, where it merges with warming alcohol. Quite flavorful. Has a mature, mellow complexity about it.
