GABF 2005: I had this at near last call on day 2 and didnít write down a lot of notes. Chocolate and coffee with a nice note of fresh bittering hops and lactic twang. Smooth and silky, very oatmeal like . A very good sweet stout.

1/3 of a pint on draught at the Great British Beer Festival 2012. Black as night with little head. Super chocolate roast aroma and flavour, although the flavour doesnít come through as well as the aroma. Plenty of body. Roasty and strong.

10oz pour @ Baileys. Pours clear black, light tan head, spotty lacing. Aroma is roasted toasted malt. Flavor is malt, licorice, hints of chocolate. Sweet and heavy, alcohol isnít completely hidden, low carbonation. Long lasting aftertaste. Pretty much your standard sell-done porter.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask (gravity dispense) at Great British Beer Festival, day 4 on 5 August 2011. Very dark brown, tending towards black, with a modest beige head. Lots of chocolate and burnt malt notes on the nose. More of the same in the flavour, joined by some treacle and a touch of Pontefract cake. Alcohol is quite spirity and hot but thereís enough richness and body to balance things. Maybe a little sweet, borderline sticky.

GBBF. Cask. Opaque brown beer, little tan head. Smooth palate. A little chocolate, marmite and minerals. Alright - still struggling with my palate after that bloody Stone Chipolte Porter!

GraviCask (GBBF2011, Friday)
A little maple sytup in the aroma - portends a sticky, treacly experience. In the mouth indeed itís a bit sticky. Taste is a little yeasty, a little meaty, certainly some bouillon. Too sweet and sticky, lacking balance.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask at GBBF, 2011. Black pour with a tan head. Coffee, dark chocolate and black treacle aroma. Quite dry. Light coffee flavour oddly with a strange strawberry like quality on the palate (canít be right?). (Rubs chin) very interesting.
