masonjer (429), Lansing, Michigan, USA May 20, 2008 Updated: Jun 19, 2008Had this on tap at the Frankenmuth World Expo of Beer. Poured almost pitch black with a small brown head. Smell was fruity, a little roast, some molasses. Taste didn’t have hardly any roast at all, some dark fruit again, chocolate, with a slight tang on the finish. Tmoney99 (3503), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Mar 11, 2008 MBG Winter Fest 2008. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Moderate roasted malt, chocolate and spice aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met. Silphium (2006), Lansing, Michigan, USA Feb 28, 2008 2008 MBG Winter Beer Fest. This beer took me by surprise at first with a salty, leathery characteristic that subsided after a few sips to licorice, soy, chocolate, and bitter roast. Oily, medium body. Interesting. pantanap (725), Chicago, Illinois, USA Feb 27, 2008 sampled at MBGWF....poured almost black with a nice hefty brown head.... a pretty straightforward nose comprised of chocolate malt, molasses, and dark fruit.... flavors of nice creamy bitter chocolate, dark fruits, and more bitter chocolate BBB63 (3767), La Porte, Indiana, USA Feb 24, 2008 2008 MBG Winter Fest: Completely opaque with a great creamy tan head and excellent lace, beautiful. The aroma has notes of coffee, caramel, chocolate, raisin, plum, anise, oak and tobacco esters. The taste is very twangy and fruity with a light brandy and wood base. There is a notable coffee, chocolate, and spicy quality on the finish. A bit of mineral water tone as well. The mouth feel is lively and smooth, warming aftertaste. This is really nice and a tad strange with the twangy overtones.
