MBG Winter Fest 2008. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy off-white head that was mostly lasting with fair lacing. Moderate roasted malt, chocolate and spice aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. My expectations where met.

2008 vintage. The beer pours to a pitch black body with lots of visible yeast sediment. A really tall dark tan head and nice heavy lacing sits on top. The aroma is a typical dry stout with some sweet milk chocolates and some dry hops. The flavor is really interesting. A definite sweet stout up front and a huge dry stout on the finish. Complex chocolates and dry black malts. Some light vanilla. The palate is dry yet sweet.

UPDATED: JUN 19, 2008 Had this on tap at the Frankenmuth World Expo of Beer. Poured almost pitch black with a small brown head. Smell was fruity, a little roast, some molasses. Taste didn’t have hardly any roast at all, some dark fruit again, chocolate, with a slight tang on the finish.

Bottle, shared by GodOfThunder. Pours a deep thick black with a large dark tan head, nice lacing. Hops and oak on the nose, roast and chocolate. In flavor, acidic, fruity, figs, oak, bitter hops, heavy on the roast grain, bitter chocolate, licorice. Low carb, drying, a bit acidic, slightly chalky with lasting impressions of oak and hop bitterness.

this is a distint rating taken during michigan winter beer festival, 2009...unfortunately, notes were not taken on most of these beers, but numbers are accurate.

Bottle:   Pours black, very little head, sparce lacing.   Soft roasted malts and graham cracker nose, a bit of ash and soft oak.   Sweet smokey ash up front, roasty, a little lactose, some oak.   Not a hop bomb at all as its not terribly hoppy, which is good.   Backside shows a bit of soy and dark or bakers chocolate.   This one is nice in that its not overly roasty or acrid.   Not as heavy as I would have liked, but its nice.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Soy, over ripened dark pitted fruit, oak, ash, roasted malts all make up teh finish.   Better than I expected!   Thanks Kevin!
