CharlesDarwin (1412), State College, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 2, 2008 22oz Bottle. Soapy nose mingles spruce bough with porter chocolate. Very, very quiet. Maybe too cold, but a vigorous pour doesn’t shake up a ton of aroma. Some hoppy pine nose mingles with sweet molasses. Pours a very even florid brown. Very sticky soap in flushed khaki adorns the top. Initially, a rush of lightly sweet malt, backed with a good dose of honey residuals and caramel. Some light popcorn notes. Not getting any real heavy spruce character, if it’s supposed to be there. A nip soapy and soft. Honey composes a good bit of the sugar flavor profile. Some deeper cookie-like crumb comes through. Porter malting could be much more expressive. Flavors are all rather quiet, making this one somewhat mediocre. More flavor! Both in strength and nuance. It’s clean and I think the right flavors are in place and balanced, but there just needs to be more to it. Sean, thanks for sharing this rare series.
