My Bottom Line:
This round Quadrupel’s profile of caramel, cloves, oranges and licorice builds with every sip, almost balanced out by earthy hop bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the orange-hued dark brown.
-A prevalent fruitiness is also akin to plums and raisins.
-This might be a tad too sweet for my preference in the style, but it remains a very nice spicy sipper.
-This is not one of those Quads which derives most of its flavors through malts and yeast. Spices are quite prominent throughout.

Bottle.

Sampled from bottle @ the some people are tired tasting (after borefts 2013 day 1). Hazy orange to light brownish color, small off - white head. Smell and taste malts, alcohol, sweetness, wood. A bit too much alcohol I’d say but not bad at all.

In short: A uber-sweet, spicy and fruity Belgian strong dark ale. An acceptable sipper. Way below average for an Abt
How: From a fancy 750ml bottle at Montreal Mondial de la Bière 2010
The look: Cloudy orange bronze body topped by a medium beige head
In long: Nose of sweet fruity bakery, yeast and some spices. The taste has the expected dark fruits but is also is very sweet with sweet caramel and sweet liquorice but also some plain old brown sugar. Feels like crunchy brownies at times. A nutmeg-clove-like spiciness that did not really work for me. The beer feels a bit heavy. Nothing memorable but it’s not every day that I get to try a Brazilian Abt!!! Brazil is the lungs of the planet. Japanese are the brains of the planet. And so on… North-Americans are also a body part of the planet. That body part is located in the lower back region of the body.

(Rating #3062)

Scopey (5528) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - JAN 16, 2012
Bottle at Delirium RJ. It pours dark brown, with a large off-white head. The nose is sticky dark fruit, wood, sherry, jam and booze. The taste is raisin, plum, currant, wood, varnish, nut, sherry, jam, with a very boozy finish. Full body, lively carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Pretty tasty, but too much alcohol warmth.

Bottle obtained in a trade with FlavioSP. Thx! 375 ml. bottle split with Benzai @ the some people are tired tasting. Hotel post day #1 @ Borefts 2013. Corked & caged bottle. Pours a fox brown orange with no head at all. Nose is very sweet, oxidized caramel malts, sweet liquid cane sugar, quality alcohol, thick wood, marmalade in the nose. Taste is thick orange peel, lots of liquid cane sugar, warming, oxidized very thick caramel malts, toffee, brown sugar, thick jam, slight strawberry, warming, boozy in a good way, prunes,… Sticky caramel malts body & basically no carb. at all. Very nice & original barley wine, just not a quad.

TheJester (1727) - Peterborough, Ontario, CANADA - JAN 3, 2011
Sampled from a bottle at Mondial de la bière. Copper-orange with a beautiful, sticky head. Lovely, yeasty-spicy-sweet Belgian aroma. The flavour is fairly complex, with brown sugar, yeast, and stewed peaches. The mouthfeel is, well, sticky. It kinda coats your mouth. Medium to low carbonation. Very nice quad.

On Tap. A brown color with a beige head, aroma is quite sweet like some toffee and malt. Flavor is a balanced bitterness and sweetness, caramel, nuts notes. Mouthfeel is very longer and you can feel the bitterness and sweetness.. Lovely beer...
