COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Berkshire County homebrewer Bert Holdredge won the ‘Brewers Choice’ prize in the 2011 New York City Homebrew Competition with this recipe (the prize was for a commercial batch to be brewed on our system) – but was disqualified from the official BJCP competition since he’d forgotten to remove a label from a bottle. A dangerously drinkable pitch-black stout with rich chocolate and peat smoke notes, and just a hint of alcohol warmth. RECOMMENDED FOOD PAIRINGS: Bacon dishes, forest fruits, blue or other funky cheeses, dulce de leche, creme brulee. Note ABV was 8.6% for the 2011 batch, up to 9.5% for 2012.

A deep dark stout with a very thin brown head. In aroma, a smooth sweet chocolate milk with light vanilla notes, light molasses. In mouth, a smooth sweet chocolate with light coffee bitterness, grassy, a tad light bodied in mouth, but well done. On tap at R&H, June 30, 2012.

Draft @ Alewife Queens. Pours jet black with a thin khaki head. The aroma has nice subtle notes of bittersweet chocolate, anise, coffee, and a slight hint of smoke. The alcohol is barely detectable. The coffee beans and smokiness seem to be the focus of the taste. Also some notes of roasted malts and chocolate. Has a full mouthfeel and the slightest hint of bitterness and alcohol in the finish. Good solid stuff!

Pours an opaque dark brown with with no lacing. Chocolate, coffee, vanilla and smoked malt in the aroma. Not what I look for in and IS, but this isn’t brewed to style

On draft at the brewery. Pours a midnight black, pure darknees and solid molasses. head is hight to start, then fizzles to engulf the glass moderately throughout the brew. Taste is light chocolate, slight fig and plum, roasted cocoa and deep burnt granola. Aby is well hidden and was surprised to find out it was at 9.6% when sampled. A fine brew here and one to share with others to not only impress but to enjoy. Ill be back for the rest. A 5 mintue drive it all it takes....
