COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Berkshire County homebrewer Bert Holdredge won the ‘Brewers Choice’ prize in the 2011 New York City Homebrew Competition with this recipe (the prize was for a commercial batch to be brewed on our system) – but was disqualified from the official BJCP competition since he’d forgotten to remove a label from a bottle. A dangerously drinkable pitch-black stout with rich chocolate and peat smoke notes, and just a hint of alcohol warmth. RECOMMENDED FOOD PAIRINGS: Bacon dishes, forest fruits, blue or other funky cheeses, dulce de leche, creme brulee. Note ABV was 8.6% for the 2011 batch, up to 9.5% for 2012.

on tap at blind tiger. poured tempting shade of black, but with a faint brown head. was hoping for a bit more. didnt necessarily drink or feel like an imperial stout, but delicious, roasty flavor. sneaky, warm alcohol finish. happy i had the pleasure of sippping some.

Dark brown with small brown head. Aroma chocolate, toasty malt, a little vanilla. Full body, creamy mouthfeel, a not unpleasant alcohol warming presence. Flavor is moderately sweet, cocoa and coffee mainly, roasted character is there but more in the background. Some spice and fruitiness as well. Nice complexity. Very good.

Location: Draft at Pony Bad, 2/22/14

Aroma: The aroma is roasted malts and burnt malts, spice, chocolate, and some booze
Appearance: It pours a dark brown-black color, with a small-to-average brown head and lace
Flavor: The taste is much the same, roasted and burnt malts, spice, and a little sweetness
Palate: The body is medium-full, it has a somewhat creamy feel, and a bit of an ABV burn too
Overall Impression: I found this one to be a pretty solid Imperial Stout. This is certainly a beer that is worth trying. Interesting stuff. Give this one a shot.

Sample at Ginger Man NYC. Brownish-black pour with a medium foamy beige head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Medium to full body with a roasty character of malt and coffee, along with some dark chocolate. The finish is espresso and malt. Pretty good overall.

On tap @ Blind Tiger, New York. Pours black with a creamy finger thick mocha head. Aroma is nice and malty with raisins, prunes and tobacco, as well as leather, vanilla and bourbon. Full creamy body with almost no carbonation at all. Flavour is sweet with malts and tobacco, but not quite up to the promising aroma. Still nice though.

A deep dark stout with a very thin brown head. In aroma, a smooth sweet chocolate milk with light vanilla notes, light molasses. In mouth, a smooth sweet chocolate with light coffee bitterness, grassy, a tad light bodied in mouth, but well done. On tap at R&H, June 30, 2012.
