Warsteiner Dunkel was a pleasant surprise as I am someone who can pass on the Warsteiner lager. The beer pours a brown color with a creamy head and soft carbonation. The aromas are rich, malty, but not overpowering. The flavor is a revelation, full of coffee and dark chocolate, medium bodied and balanced. The beer is refreshing, sessionable, and good with comfort foods. Compare to Guinness Black Lager, but with more craft and smoothness and a more diverse malt profile.

The beer pours a dark brown. Minimal light brown head. A light nutty flavor, unexpected from a lager. Very tasty.

Poured from bottle into pint glass
Appearance – Pours a mahogany color with some quite nice red highlights. The off-white head formed upon pouring was quite large and had a moderate level of retention. The fading head in the end gave way to a medium amount of lacing.
Smell – The aromas were sweet and fruity. They were heaviest of a sweet cherry and apple smell, but also contained a light roasted bready and a light hop smell.
Taste – The taste starts out of a bready, cherry and a lighter roasted flavor. The roasted flavors begin growing stronger after the initial taste. These mix with some flavor of a toast flavor and more cherry as the taste advances further. In the end, these flavors, when mixed with the a lighter earthy hop taste, leave a interesting bitter taste on the tongue (I can’t decide if I like it or not).
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is just a tad above average in terms of creaminess and thickness for a brew of only 4.8%. It also has just a slightly lower than level carbonation. These two qualities are quite nice for the roasted flavors of the brew and help accentuate the fruit and roasted flavors.
Overall – A pretty good brew with some nice fruit and roasted flavors. While tasty it maintains a fairly high level of drinkability. Not too shabby.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2014 Rather light and slightly acidic dark beer with some toasted caramel malts and little bit of sour fruit. Not bad for them hot summer days.

The only other dunkel I’ve had was at KC Bier Co (draught). This is not that, but it is a dunkel and it’s good enough.

Pours a clear mahogany with a light tan small head. Nose is of malt. Creamy but thin viscosity. Taste is dark roasted malt with some light hops notes on the finish. Only an average beer; not top tier. Pairs well with popcorn or nuts.
