So, I’ve always kinda complained about how Warsteiner is a shitty example of German beer. Especially the Dunkel. But upon my last tasting, it started to grow on me a bit. Maybe it took pouring it into a nice clear stein to see it’s mahogany, oaky, copper color and nicely sustaining frothy white head. The aroma is rather nice too; very sweet and malty with caramel and a hint of cocoa. The flavor is the only thing that is left to be desired next to a higher quality dunkel. Yet it is still flavorful enough to enjoy while being rather light and refreshing. Cocoa and vanilla with roasted malts. Nice, medium finish. Not too shabby. But no Ayinger Altbairisch Dunkel..

Keg @ Gasthof, Minneapolis. Deep reddish / chestnut pour with a small off-white head. Nose has some gentle toasted malt. A bit of caramel. Fairly sweet flavor. Caramel and some toasted malt. Bready. A bit tired / muted. Fairly light body, spritzy carb. Overall, a fairly middle of the road effort.

11.2 oz. bottle. Pours a clear dark brown with a cream-colored head. Aroma of malt and roast. Taste is dark bread, roasted malts, coffee, hazelnut, and chocolate notes. It definitely exceeded my expectations.

Dark brown clear colour, medium tan head. Aroma has malts, chestnuts and wheatbread. Taste is sweet and sour, well balanced between both. Has a strong licorice sensation, aftertaste is strong on the bitter side, some hints of malt and molases. Light body, thin texture. Very strong for a 4.9% ABV, good with a steak.
