COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark, medium bodied ale offers the drink-ability of a much lighter beer. The inviting chocolate and malty flavors fade into a slightly dry, silky smooth finish. Why have just one? 4.0% alcohol by volume. • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association • 2008 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, World Beer Cup • 2006 Silver Medal Winner, Brown Porter, North American Brewers’ Association

A redfisn brown porter with a thin brown head. In aroma, a weird biscuit malt with light boiled veggies. In mouth, a light nutty roasted malt with grassy hops, so-so.

From nitro tap at Sheraton SLC. Pours black with brown at edges, typical creamy nitro head. Aroma was lightly of chocolate, just a hint of coffee. Flavor matched, with a somewhat nutty finish. A very enjoyable beer.

Nitro charged draft. Nice lacing and aroma compared to burnt toast. Rich flavor, malty and medium mouth feal, not like a stout but similar in color. Love the name but not too impressed with the beer.

Dark mahogany, slight red tint, good foam cap, light lace. Chocolate, light roast, slight coffee aroma. Mineral berry. Mainly cocoa and mildly nutty. Taste is somewhat the same, with mild coffee taste all around. Some ashy grassiness. Ashy finish like day old coffee almost. Not quite day old though, its decent especially for 4% porter. Really if you like some coffee/ashy taste this has some full flavor for a light porter.

Bottle. Nearly black with a pretty garnet edge when held to light. The long lasting head is light brown. A nice nose of cola, milk chocolate and anise. Hints of pecans are also present. This tastes slightly ashy, especially in the finish. Otherwise there is some coffee and notes of cheap milk chocolate. This is a light middle of the road brown style porter. Not a stand out, but certainly well made with light roast.

I wanted to love Polygamy Porter. It has an awesome name, fun bottle art, and a clever tagline ("Why have just one?") Unfortunately, this beer just doesn’t have anything new to offer to the style that isn’t already out there. The low alcohol content is new, I guess, but it seems unnecessary. Most porters already make fine session beers. I don’t see the point of making a porter that has a slightly lower ABV than the rest, especially if it lacks the sweetness and richness of many of those others. While this isn’t a misstep for Wasatch, it seems to be an effort that could use some work.

Pours black with a thin tan head. Coffee in aroma and flavor but also some metallic going on. Meh.

Dark brown to black pour with a thin, creamy tan head. Aroma is light roast, char, dry roasted nuts, toffee and a hint of mineral and earthy hops. Flavor is roast nuts, chocolate and overcooked toffee up front a little coffee, bicarbonate, light mineral notes, toast, light bready yeast and a little ashy char to the finish. Light body, creamy entry, dry finish, moderate carbonation. Pretty good overall, the weird bicarbonate/mineral notes definitely take it down a bit.
