Dixonian (1562) - Plano, Texas, USA - APR 22, 2011
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2012 12oz bottle. Clear amber brew, slight beige head. Aroma is slightly nutty, malty, and some spice (cinnamon?). A bit thin, missing the creamy mouthfeel you usually find in a Doppelbock. Caramel malt with some sweetness and hop bite.

Deep clear amber with a bubbly off-white head. Aroma of nuts, caramel, toffee and a hint of spice. The taste is the same, with a bit of alcohol tossed in - mostly nutty and a little sweet. Medium body. Somewhat mild, but a pretty decent beer. Odd that there is a picture of the Salt Lake Temple on the bottle when Mormons aren’t supposed to drink...

Aroma is mild, all malty, maybe a little molassas and cola,no hops ,flavor is a decent doppel malting, like a backstrap and teacle, pleasing toasty dark grain hint of alcohol, somewwhat smooth , taste more satisfying then aroma. I would be happy with a couple of these a night for the evening

degbert (1374) - Austin, Texas, USA - MAR 9, 2011
UPDATED: MAR 27, 2015 Bottle. Pous a golden brown with a lite head. A lot of caramel and toffee on the nose; those notes carry through on the palate with a definite cinnamon brown sugar overtone. Holds its alcohol well. It ain’t Ayinger, but it’s decent.

otakuden (1783) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAR 6, 2011
Appearance: mahogany with ruby and browns bordered by a bubbly collar. Swirls with khaki head, tannish, and lace.
Nose: woody, dry, dead leaves. Old leather and a touch stale. Musty. Mild overall but the pervasive stale old mustiness is an attribute, not a detriment.
Palate: thin with brown sugared dates and a distracting overwhelming saccharine sweetness which wasn’t apparent anywhere in the nose. Candied sugars than candied fruitcake. Thin and weak.
Final Thoughts: while the nose was different, twas intriguingly so. Too bad the palate was nowhere intriguing or appetizing. Meh.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark, deep amber with beige head. Aroma is a bit lighter the. Expected...notes of burnt caramel malt and faint signs of dark fruit with subtle mild hop spice blended in. Flavor is pretty solid, same as aroma and a bit bolder. Mouthfeel is thinner then expected. Overall, some tasty stuff.

bottle from Plaza at home (27Jan11) Pours light caramel with a medium light cream head. Aroma is caramel, nutmeg and toffee. Flavor is rich toasted and caramel malt, munich, yeast esters, a nice finish of clean hops and sweet bread malts.

UPDATED: APR 17, 2012 You’re liable to get shot if they find you drinking this in Utah (it’s a joke), but I wouldn’t be surprised if they string you up on a fence along the highway like roadkill. Great beer, so it’s worth that risk.

12oz bottle. Filtered orange brown, thin beige head. Deep malty aroma, true to style, very nice. Big doughy Doppelbock, I’m diggin it. Malty, but not overloaded in thick specialty malts, lets the subtle yeast tones shine. Big caramel body. Solidly executed, an impressive offering.

Think I’ll pass on the "big love" from the land of zion. Poured with a decent , off white head that lasted and some lace. Color was clear medium amber. Aroma was caramel, malt, and dominated with solvents. Flavor was like nose and overly sweet. Body was thin and carbonation was ok. Finish is like flavor and not a repeater.
