iowaherkeye (1382), rocking podunk Marengo!, Iowa, USA Jun 16, 2008 12oz bottle, no date from Zac (hellomynameis), thanks! Poured aggressively--clear auburn with a 2 1/2 finger off-white head that did last. Lots of toasted grains up front with light caramel and earth next. Maybe a bit of honey, but that’s about it. The flavor had too much caramel sweetness dominating most everything with some everpresent alcohol. The spicy alcohol dried the finish out as well, with bitterness peaking at a 2 out of 10. Medium body with low carbonation. Meh, not a so good.
travita (738), Lewisville, Texas, USA Sep 3, 2008 Red to brown in color with a beige colored head. Clear. Smell is buscuits, caramel, and malts. taste is sweet, caramel, almost nutty. Ok but nothing special. hellbilly (865), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Aug 27, 2008 crystal clear yellowy brown color with a long lasting light tan head. smells quite malty... floral alcohol shows and doesn’t try to hide, grain, chocolate, caramel and toasted nuts. the flavor is quite the same as the aroma... toasty caramel graininess, nuts, chocolate and a dry grainy finish. alcohol is not noticed in the flavor. nutty chocolate-y aftertaste. light to medium body given the abv% and malt sugars... watery mouth feel and an all around ’dead’ texture on the tongue... hopdog (4568), Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 6, 2008 12oz bottle acquired in trade with douglas88 (thanks!). Poured a medium copperish color with a smaller sized off white head. Slightly hazy. Aromas of toasted caramel, some roast, toffee, and nuts. Tastes of caramel (lots), ligth chocolate, roast, and nuts. Alcohol content well hidden. Goldorak (424), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jul 26, 2008 Sampled a bottle at the Bayou in SLC.
Dark ruby/crimson brew, with a thin head with little clumpy islands in the center of my glass.
Dark caramel malts well balanced out by a firm alcoholic nose.
Carbonation is vivid and prickly, taste is quite similar to the smell, with the caramel just enough in the forefront to subdue the alcohol heat, which in turn brings all the flavors together. After drinking that many low ABV Beers, the mouthfeel on this one was quite powerful and I enjoyed it a lot. Linus_Stick (1527), Moon Township, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 23, 2008 Courtesy Secret Santa. Thanks! A standard doppelbock. Aroma was sweet dark malt, caramel and a hint of roastiness. Pour was a nice hazy medium brown with amber hues and a one finger off white head. Taste was a little stale but pretty good. Sweet and caramel malt, molasses and roasted toffee with a dry aftertaste. Hides the alcohol wonderfully.
