jcwattsrugger (3757), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Mar 13, 2006 on tap-pours a light tan head. Color is brown with red tint. Aroma is malt, sweet. Taste is medium malt, hops, sweet, nutty, medium body. Nice. PeterA (336), USA Feb 12, 2006 Nice malty, mild aroma. The color is dark amber, with a thick off-white head. Kind of smoky and malty. The palate is chauky. A good, but not great beer, the flavors seemed muted. OldGrowth (1265), Cary, North Carolina, USA Feb 8, 2006 @ Brewpub. Good nose, sweet. Roasty, chocolate/cocoa. Hints of fruits, raisin, prune. Little nuttiness too. Clean reddish brown color. Good head and lacing. Bitter flavor, like aroma. I got a peaty thing as it warmed. Medium body, Lite creamy oily muthfeel, bitterdry finish. Nice as it warmed. Great session ale. ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Feb 6, 2006 Draught pint at the brewery on 2/4/06. A lucid garnet note mixed with mahogany, chestnut and auburn. Looks like newly finished stained oak or mahogany. Light chill haze to it, but otherwise clear. Small beige head shows poor to moderate retention, with a touch of film left behind, here and there. Nuts and light marzipan in the nose, with a dry, brown bready note as well. Light molasses/chocolate suggestions, touch of light raisins and then a finish of dry crystal malt. Hops are light, green and leafy with little apparency from the cascades. Just a mere hint of citrus. The flavor begins with a mix of chocolate, dry, nutty maris otter notes and a bit of raisins and prunes. Light vanilla and cream suggestions fade quickly, while crystal malt sugars take their place and ultimately fade in to the finish. Dry, toasty and bready on the end, with a fair amount of water. Bits of toffee and chocolate linger on. Carbonation a bit high, but it settles out well, with a bit of a chewy texture, in the end. Very drinkable indeed. fbennett (293), Lowell, Massachusetts, USA Jan 31, 2006 This beer pours a sick dark chocolate brown, and leaves a thick tan head. The aroma is so powerful, you don’t even need to stick your head in the glass to get a whiff of this great brown ale. The nose of this ale is sweet, chocolate, roasted nuts, caramel sweetness, as well as a little bit of vanilla. The taste on the palate is smooth, I love when you put a beer on your palate and you get exactly what you smelled. The taste mirrored the aroma and then some. I love this beer and I will def be back to get another growler or sit down and have a pint.
