From tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Aroma is dark roasted malty to almost smoked dark malt. Lingering dark malty and slight smoked. Dark malty finish. Medium dry finish.

Draft @ EBF. Dark pour with some head. Some light chocolate and roasted malt notes. Chocolate isn’t overly sweet but not really bitter either. Porter is lacking in the mouthfeel department.

So brown it’s black? No carbonation, Thin cream off white head fades quick. Chocolate (duh), Malty (duh), Vanilla?, Coffee? Huge semi sweet chocolate taste. Very strong and bitter after taste. Smooth up front, Bitter in the end. Full body [and then some]! I can have one. Not cause it’s bad. Because it’s so heavy. This is a great beer! Just gotta stop at one [ok maybe two].

On tap. Chocolate aroma with hints of coffee. Dark brown, almost black color with a nice beige head. The flavor matches the aroma, with nice chocolate and mocha hints. It went down smooth with the only draw back being a little bit of chaulk in the texture. A very pleasant beer.

Tap@Watch City Brewing, Waltham, Ma. Nice dark chocolate flavour, quite malty, lightly sweet, but with a bitter chocolate and mocha finish, tasty stuff i have to say, more-ish!

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2005 On draught at Watch City on 6/29/2005. Deep brown-black, inky, transluscent or possibly opaque (couldnt really test it fully). Burnt-tan head is medium-sized and well-retained providing some light lacing down the glass. Aroma begins with sweet chocolate, rich and dark, but not quite bitter. In the background lingers some light roasted malt and a hint of raisins and prunes. Sticky chocolate-toffee notes are quite aromatic and inviting. Quickly diving in, I am faced with a wonderful, authentic, chocolate flavor, you can really taste the cocoa beans in this one, must be some high quality stuff. Earthy, dry barley notes abound, lightly roasted and flavorful, giving a lightly burnt edge to the finish. Malt is well-extracted yet this does not kill you with sweetness, it remains quite drinkable, never syrupy or cloying. I’d like a bit more in the way of prunes, coffee and raisins, as it is mostly chocolate and light roast. Though, the chocolate is just divine and perfectly done. Reminded me a good deal of Sam Adams Chocolate bock, but I guess they used Berghoff chocolate in that, so that cant be the same chocolate. Anyways, it’s damned good, with a smooth, almost silky mouthfeel and medium-full body, some peppery carbonation issues at the start, but it smooths out nicely as it breathes.
Rerate. On draught at the brewpub again, with Duff. A good beer again, but it already seems like they’ve scaled back on the amount of chocolate they use. Just overall less flavorful and substantial than the previous batch.
