jcwattsrugger (3757), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Dec 30, 2006 Matt’s Mocha Stout-hand pump-pours a creamy light brown head and black color. Aroma is fresh coffee grounds. Taste is coffee. Not my style. OldGrowth (1256), Cary, North Carolina, USA Oct 5, 2005 Cask @ Brewpub. Good nose, bitter. Coffee, compost, molasses. Dark brown color with big head, they needed a couple of pours to get a full pint, that faded to a covering. Bitter flavors, like aromas with a little fruitiness, like plum/prune, grapefruit shows up as you rool it on your tounge. Thin body, litew smooth mouthfeel, bitter finish. Grapefruit really came into play here. The compost/grapefruit really stand out the most, might turn off some, but not me. ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Nov 19, 2004 Cask conditioned pint @ the brewery. Served a very murky, drab greyish brown with a small beige head atop. Opaque. Aroma of light hazelnuts, bitter cocoa, and plenty of mocha. Flavor begins dry, but with a creamy body. Picks up some brown sugar notes to add to the mocha flavor. Dry roastiness is balanced by the creamy sweet malted body, but then . . .the hops attack! Hmm, I was not too impressed that they used a good deal of bitter hops in this. I enjoy hops, I enjoy coffee. I don’t enjoy hops soaked in coffee, and that is what this tastes like. You get a weird floral bitterness, bordering on citrus and right as you taste that, you’ve got the mocha flavor. It didnt match well, at least not in my book. Great body though.
