jhumphries69 (513), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Jun 18, 2008 On draft at brewpub. The pour is jet black with a thin, tan head. The aroma is bittersweet with coffee and molasses. The flavor has a nice balance of bitterness and sweetness. It has a decent level of fruitiness and esters, but also a good punch of coffee/chocolate notes from the roasted grains. There is also a decent bit of residual sweetness from caramel malts. At mid-palate, fruity hops and molasses battle it out. At the finish - full flavor, roasty with some sweetness and some earthy and fruity hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is quite soft and smooth. The beer was pushed with nitrogen, but it fits as it brings a creaminess to the tongue that carbon dioxide likely would not have brought in the same way. Overall, this was a very decent American Stout (not quite Foreign Stout, though). RCL (1021), Boston, Massachusetts, USA Jun 17, 2007 Flavor has a tangyness a bit like weak coffee. Not great. I seem to remember this being better the last time I had it. May merit a re-rate. jcwattsrugger (3942), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Mar 13, 2006 on tap-pours a tan head with black color. Aroma is dark malt, sweet, coffee. Taste is dark malt, coffee, chocolate. Thin mouthfeel. OK carbonation. Not my taste. RooftopRogue (423), Champaign, Illinois, USA Mar 7, 2006 Thanks ClarkVV! The aroma of this beer was a disappointment. All that could be detected was a mild hint of dates. It was black in color with only a glaze of a head. This thin smooth beer offers the infused flavor of dates and anise. The flavor did have enough character to leave a decent taste lingering for a few moments after swallowing. (This was from a growler and I drank it on a night with many of the top 25 stouts.) argo0 (6176), Washington DC, USA Dec 28, 2005 (on nitro) Opaque black body topped by a creamy tan head. Aroma is medium sweet, coffee, light chocolate. Taste is medium sweet, coffee, some bittersweet chocolate. Creamy medium body.
