Previously brewed at DuBocq (Nov 2013)

Waterloo Tripel is brewed on huge amounts of pilsener malt. Aromatic Saazer and Spalter hops are added, but to no further extent than to give it a bitterness equal to a pilsener which gives more room to the beer’s sweetness. The beer is fermented with Du Bocq’s original yeast strain which is responsible for the delicate, spicy expression. After maturation and filtration the beer has a secondary fermentation in the bottle which causes its slight cloudiness.

33cl bottle from 16th St. Liquor in West Vancouver. Poured murky golden with a nice persistent white head with some lacing. Taste is moderately sweet malt and candy sugar with a slight bitterness. Decent, but not special Belgian triple.

inbirraveritas (1216) - Budapest, HUNGARY - JUL 22, 2011
33 cl bottle from Belga Sörök Háza, Bp. Hazy golden coloured brew with a broad pored and medium sized white head, which diminishes completely. Sweet-spicy, fruity smell. Mild fruity aroma with oranges/mandarin followed by grain, herbs and coriander spicyness in the middle, mouthfeel’s sharp. The finish brings some alcohol, citrus and herbs along, which leaves a long aftertaste behind. Not bad, not bad, but expected a bit more.

Multiple bottles in Brugge. Pours a clearish gold with a huge white head. The aroma is quite impressive, especially considering how saturated my senses were by the time I had this. Floral, sharp herbal hops with a very nice honeycomb-esque malt body. Flavour is equally pleasing with a lot of yeasty dryness in the finish as well as a minor booze bite. Citrus, peach and perfume feature prominently. A decent beer in tribute to the battle I suppose.

Clear, medium golden body with a large, white, long-lived head, excellent lacing. Yeast, fruits, spices, herbs and dust on the nose. Medium sweet taste with a very light bitter finish. The flavours are a bit too dominated by a chalky yeastiness that leaves the palate dessert dry. And my teeth, oh, my teeth, it feels like they’re covered with chalk! In addition to the chalk, there are spices, herbs, mild resin, fruits, honey and faint alcohol. I love tripels so of course I like this one as well, but it’s not the most exciting one I’ve had. It lacks a bit on either the sweet or the bitter side, or preferably both.

Pours a clear gold with an impressive, lasting pure white head with some lacing. Aroma is alcohol and sweet dried apricot/peach. Tastes of table-sugar and apple juice, alcohol and light hops. Body is well-carbonated and crisp. Typical tripel, a bit too sweet and I’m big on the apple-juice taste. Quaffable, though.

An average tripel at best. Nothing too special about it, marking it on the list, moving on.
