argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Nov 23, 2006 (750ml bottle) Large, rocky white head atop lightly hazed straw body. Aroma is moderately sweet, honey, herbal, orange, some alcohol. Taste is much the same. Soft, medium-full body. hophead75 (1945), Boonton, New Jersey, USA Nov 20, 2006 11.2 oz bottle. Hazy light brown. The aroma is full of fruit, malt, light notes of brown sugar, and candi sugar and spice. Taste is apples/pears, raisins, lightly bready, light spices, and more malt than I usually taste in a tripel. lightly spicy and smooth finish. DruncanVeasey (2695), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England Nov 11, 2006 Updated: May 17, 2009Deeply murky, spiralling orange tulip fresh off the boat. God bless the in-laws. Billowing fragrant suds and that evocative, subtly spicy Belgian perfume you can’t quite put your finger on. Lethally silky fruit and spice. A sniff of lemon. Clove, banana, coriander, orange peel? Who knows. Who cares? And just look at that lacework. Belgian medicine out of the very top drawer (848517-4.2)
UPDATE Bottle at The Penguin, probably a couple of years old. Had every expectation I’d be rating this down, but it isn’t going to happen. Fishbowl ruddy amber swirling with chunks beneath a billowing dense head. Sweet sweet honeyed pine and VERY grassy aroma with botanical spice, deep juicy hops and yeast, tender caramel maltiness, fruitbowl of shrivelled apricots and tangerines, including the wood and varnish. Succulent grassy tripel dusting with juniper and pine shavings; slick and honeyish but light years from the sweetshop. Good glowy booze, dried apricots, dandelion, apple peel. Some buttered Czechness, furniture and almond piping up once the head’s climbed down an inch or so. Original rate stands. A corker. kopestes (164), Braine l’Alleud, Belgium Nov 5, 2006 0.33l bottle at home. Nice hazy golden color, tick white head. Fruity and yeasty aroma. Taste is sweet of malt with a spicy bitter twist in the middle and bitter hopy finish. Quite a good triple. fonefan (10868), VestJylland, Denmark Nov 4, 2006 Bottle. Light golden color with a dense off-white head. Unclear. Fruits, spice, yeast and some orange peel in the nose. Flavour is fruity and yeasty. Loads of spices and orange. Quite refreshing. Medium bodied. Has some light alcohol notes. Hugerat (432), somerville, Massachusetts, USA Oct 28, 2006 Nice lookiing beer, huge head with loads of lace, but the relative clarity of it reveals a lot of floaties. The initial sweet, candy and bubblegum flavor yields to an oddly bitter cereal- or cardboard-like flavor. It does kinda grow on you though. All in all a nice beer. tomthompson89 (1460), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Oct 22, 2006 good beer from the guys at St berni... love the other tripels, creamy white head some fruits, some sour bitter after taste. BBB63 (4199), La Porte, Indiana, USA Oct 5, 2006 Corked bottle and served in my St Bernardus glass: Poured a hazy amber with a lasting frothy white head and very good Belgium lace. The aroma has notes of candi sugar, apricot, pear cider, cardamom, black pepper, old noble hops, plastic, and earthy yeast esters. The taste was rather old which I sort am digging with a oxidized cardboard finish after the initial hit of sweet malts, caramel, apricot, bubblegum, and other assorted sugary fun. What makes this very attractive is a nice dose of bitters around the midsection that strikes the back and sides of the palate with a cleansing effectiveness. Some lingering pungent spice on the aftertaste. The mouth feel is a tad weak and sort of fizzy but does keep it from feeling too heavy or cloy. This beer works and is aged just right, nice job Miguel. I am so proud of myself, no really.
