imdownthepub (3995), Banbury, Oxfordshire, Oxfordshire, England Sep 3, 2007 Cask conditioned at Harbury Beer Fest ’07. Dark brown with no head. Heavy coffee notes with a strong and punishing bitterness. A sharp acidity sits in the background, it is a challeging beer and not one to try often. dnas2 (522), Yelverton, Devon., Devon, England Nov 14, 2006 Cask handpump at The Wellington, Birmingham. Black with almost no head. Some citrus and toast in the nose. Very watery. Dry finish and slightly sour. The bitterness hits you at the back of the throat, with the slight hint of dark chocolate, not before. In the front, there is nothing much more than lime and water. Despite this, it is quite rich. I agree with Doppelganger, however, that it really is not worth the name. Doppelganger (1112), Oxford, Oxfordshire, England Oct 18, 2006 Gravity, Oxford CAMRA Festival. Brown/brown with a small layer of off-white head. Burnt marshmallow and toast aroma, which actually is more pleasant than that would imply. A buttery quality add a nice softness to the aroma. Perked coffee flavor, carmel. Lighter roast and body than the aroma lead you to expect. Mineral, slightly plastic finish. For something with a name like Death by Chocolate, it seems like the chocolate is fairly minimal, and the palate is on the thin side. Not a bad stout, but doesn’t live up to it’s billing. Not a lethal dose of chocolate at all. (Shut up! You’ll be dead in a minute!)
