4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 NobleSquirrel (3286) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - JAN 31, 2011
Draft sample at UMMO. Pours deep black with a chocolate brown head. Nose is perfumey vanilla and bourbon, Rich chocolate and coffee notes as well. Floral hops really help with the bouquet. On taste, the booze is well placed, not overdone and held in balance. There is a thickness to the mouthfeel with more molasses and chocolate notes. The quality of the barrel is pretty apparent. Nice bitterness to really tie this one together. Good beer.
2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 MbpBugeye (39) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - JAN 15, 2011
On tap at Bodega, Columbus. Obviously quite dark. The nice part that sets it apart is the rich tan head that leaves lots of soapy lacing. The aroma is HUGELY bourbony. The beer is, indeed, there but very buried under a slab of bourbon. I passed it over to a non craft friend for a whiff, his eyes rolled back in his head and he tipped back in his chair, crashing into another table. The taste is obviously suppressed under a bourbon dictatorship. The base beer is tasting quite nice but the whole thing tastes like I just tipped the whole barrel back and took a swig. Drinkability is very close to nil, especially this huge god forsaken shaker pint full. A short pour into a snifter would be all anyone would need.

On tap at Weasel Boy on 12/10/10. Pours pitch black with a thin tan head. Malty aroma with chocolate, mild bourbon, oaky vanilla and a bit of roast. Boozy flavor with chocolate malt, dark fruits and a boozy, yet roasty finish. Tasty.

On tap at Jackie O’s. Pours black with tan head. Aroma was bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, dark roast. Medium mouthfeel. Flavor followed the nose exactly and finished with a semi sweet bourbon note that lingered. Good stuff.
