We start with an English pale ale and add generous amounts of Ohio harvested pawpaw fruit for a refreshing mango/banana-like aroma and flavor.

On tap at Pies and Pints in Worthington, OH. Dark straw color with a very thin head. Slight aroma of sweet malt and citrus hops. Bready flavors with muted sweet banana-berry fruitiness, pine and bitter citrus. Dry finish. Clean mouthfeel. Nice summer pale.

Cloudy medium amber with a white head cover, no lace. Taste is malt and the distinctly bitter pear taste of paw paw. It moves easily through a lightly fizzed swallow to a medium finish that features mostly paw paw. Hops are hard to locate, but aren’t really needed to make this brew work. Works best for me as a one-at-a-time brew.

Draft at West End Ciderhouse. Crazy name for this one. Thought my vision was blurry. Anyway, it pours a dull, hazed yellow gold with a small white ring for a head. Notes of sugar, wheat, cereal, straw, earth, and overripe - borderline rotten - pit fruits. Light-medium bodied, with moderate to medium carbonation and a spoiled fruit juice mouthfeel. Old batch, maybe? Or are paw paws that sensitive, that if anything isn’t perfect they’re just off? I don’t know, but I couldn’t finish this. Ratings indicate there’s a better beer here, so I look forward to reevaluating.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours a very cloudy orange brown with a thin white head. Aroma of pale malts, nondescript light fruits. Flavor of light fruits, mango, banana, grapefruit, apricot, strawberry (I’ve never had paw paw so these are the fruit notes I get). Light sweetness, not overdone, very interesting! 7/4/7/4/14 (3.6/5)

Draft to taster. Looks solid; murky dark peach with white head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells good! Loads of tropical fruit along with hops and a bit of sweetness. Tastes like it smells, but not as robust. Solid on the palate with a lighter, dryer mouthfeel. Enjoyable.

Sample @ GABF 13. Pours a cloudy blonde beer with a small white head on top. Aroma is tropical fruits and floral hops. Papaya? Flavour is sweet, fruity and tropical. Pineapple, flowers. Sweet, short finish. Decent brew.

Draft sample. Poured hazy orange color with an average frothy white head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate sweet fruit aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture and soft carbonation. Moderate complex sweet flavor with a moderate sweet finish of medium duration. This sweet beer also met my expectations.

On tap at Oak Room in Athens, Ohio. Murky orange/yellow in color with a good amount of head and lacing. Aroma of a mellow fruit, along the lines of cantalope and mango. Taste is crisp and refreshing, with the fruit well balanced between hops and malts. Enjoyable summer brew that was one of the highlights during OBW.

On draught at Barley’s Ale House #1. The beer is a slightly murky orange-yellow color with a thin white head that evaporates quickly to an island of foam in the middle. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of ripe fruit and pale malts. Light body with a mildly tart fruity character along with notes of wheat and sweet malt. The finish is fruity and tangy with a slightly metallic hops aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.
