2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Keg (St. Urhos, Helsinki)
Light orange, brief head. Big honey, and light malt aroma. Soft palate, but lively carbonation. Sweet malty body, also honey. Very refreshing and full-flavoured marzen.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
(bottle) Clear, pale golden colour with a big, but not very persistent foamy white head. Moderately sweet, pale malty, slightly grainy aroma with a mineralic touch, traces of honey and citrousy, slightly herbal hops. Pale malt character, strawy and lightly grainy taste, light-sweet flavour, medium to light body, smooth and soft carbonation; strawy pale malt character with faint notes of honey; moderately sweet and light bitter finish. Alcoholic notes are also detectable. A hardly decent Helles with Märzen-strength. They do the top-fermented brews much better.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pale golden, slightly hazy with a thin white head. Aroma is bready and lightly crackery. A touch of soft herbal character and a lightly sulfurous note. Fairly minerally crispness. Very nice fresh malt character with a nice zesty minerally hoppiness. Good balance with a clean light maltiness that is well-integrated with the bright, zesty minerally hoppiness. Soft, creamy palate. Delicious brew and highly underrated.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle in Detroit. Slightly hazy, mostly clear golden appearance with a white head. Grassy, noble hoppy, huge pale/pils malty aroma. Crisp, rich pale/pils malty flavor with a straw, grassy hoppy flavor. Pretty good brew that’s in the weisn style rather than a märzen.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Enjoyed on-tap at the Buckeye Beer Engine. Apple juice colour with some white wheat. The aroma and tase of sour wheat. Below average mouthfeel. Not up to expectations for this brewery.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle thanks to ilovedarkbeer. Pours with White head that fades and a hazy yellow body. Not a Marzen in my mind. Aroma of grass, corn and butter...again not to style. Taste is wet dog and diacetyl. Light carbonation and buttery mouthfeel.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Consumed fresh right off the boat in August 2007
Clear gold colored body with a patchy white head. Nose of faint yeast, fluffy marshmallows, even fainter banana and pear, faint and subtle being the key. Does not smell like typical Marzen, but if you dig your nose into this one, you can definitely tell that it is well-made and without defects. Seems rather delicate, though, so I don’t know if a 2-month old bottle in October would be suitable, but fresh, it’s right on. Flavors of light bread, malty and sweet with pear skin, sweet creamed corn, and a light, fluffy, subtly toasty body. Good stuff.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
bottle, thank you MoritzF! Clear golden yellow, malty aroma with hints of vegetables. Malty and fruity, hints of vegetables also present in the flavour. Traces of alcohol, especially in the otherwise pleasant hoppy finish. Not bad, but not really my cup of tea.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
My Bottom Line :
Honeyed cereals topple this strong lager’s leafy, spicy hops for a drinkable but a tad limp example.
Further Personal Perceptions :
-A film of foam tops the hazy golden.
-Hops also possess discreet citrusy edges.
-There are a bit too many residual sugars for my taste (I had the same issue with many Annafestbiers, so my personal tastes in lagers are at cause here).
-Honeyed malts and leafy hop bitterness also converge in the finish. This is a linear, but well balanced brew.
-There could be a freshness issue with this bottle (there is only a production code on the bottle…), but the Weihenstephaner Original (Helles) I bought from the same store was in excellent shape. This may just be my first Weihenstephaner beer I don’t love.
