probstk (644), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jun 29, 2008 500 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a Weizen glass. JN 27/08.[br/][br/]
App.: Hazy orange-golden with a fair white meringue.
Aroma: Cereal and wheat, slightly tangy, light banana esters, a bit grassy, lightly smokey (really??), slightly spicey.
Palate: Medium body, medium-full effervescence, somewhat astringent.
Flav.: A bit more banana that on the nose, some cereal and what, a bit of clove dry with a very slight spicey grain aftertaste.[br/][br/]
I worked on the Freising campus of TUM, where this brewery is located. Oddly enough, their products were not well-liked by the locals due to rumours of headaches. This product was not well-liked by me because it was boring. Thankfully, no headache to report.
incutrav (497), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA Aug 18, 2008 $2.99 500 ml bottle. Yet another tasty hefe. Lots of banana in aroma, nice cloudy appearance. Really easy drinker, the bottle was gone quick. Tastes just like you would want a hefe to taste like. Right up there with Dancing Man, but for the price and ABV, DM has this beat for sure. sstackho (242), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 17, 2008 500mL bottle purchased from LCBO in Toronto. Pours a perfect wheat beer pour - light cloudy gold with a nice head. Nice aroma - more on the yeasty side than the banana side. The taste follow suit. A bit light, more focus on the yeast and wheat, less on the banana and clove. Some light spiciness associated with the yeast. Overall, slightly on the light side - or have my tastebuds been fried by too many weizenbocks?
Slipstream (344), USA Aug 17, 2008 Updated: Aug 19, 2008Wehenstephaner claims to be the oldest brewery in the world! This beer has a good-sized, but quickly sinking cap. There is a nice aroma of floral hops and a little citrus and wheat. Rich hefe flavor - full wheat and yeast - holds up well without lemon. Tingly carbonation. One mouthful told me that this is a first-rate hefeweizen, and subsequent swallows did not disappoint. I can see that the rest of the ratebeer crowd feels the same way, since this is in the top 1% for the style. Meatmallet (39), Salem, Illinois, USA Aug 15, 2008 Golden with a huge thick head. Lots of carbonation seen rising from the bottom.
Smells like malted wheat and a little spice. Also a little lemon.Taste is heavy of malted wheat, barley, and lemon. Not bitter and just the right touch of alcohol.Carbonation is great. Good aftertaste. This is an immediate favorite. TOSG55 (17), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA Aug 13, 2008 500 mL bottle. Pours a slightly cloudy golden blonde, with a thick head, most of which dissipates quickly. Aroma is a spicy, Belgian-like yeast. The flavor starts out with a strong yeastiness, with notes of citrus and spice. Slight aftertaste of wheat. Very nice mouthfeel. Not really my style of beer, but excellent for what it is.
