Gmoney (253), ManchVegas, New Hampshire, USA Nov 20, 2009 bottle....beautiful deep ruby pour , thin beige head ,some wispy lace. Sweet aroma of fruit and roasted malts . Sweet malt flavor , with notes of wood , chocolate and faint smoke. Well balanced and smooth. Medium bodied with light carbonation. Slight alcohol warmth, finish is dry . bogus (19), Zeist, Netherlands Nov 20, 2009 Deep brown colour. Smell: sweet malt. Taste is sweet and malty with caramel. A very nice doppelbock. coldmeat23 (185), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Nov 18, 2009 This pours a beautiful, deep red garnet color with golden brown highlights. Three finger head of light brown foam sits on top. Really good retention and great, sticky lacing.
Good god, that has got to be be richest, maltiest smelling brew I’ve had in awhile. Big, rich malts with thick gourmet caramel. Loads of brown sugar and a big dallop of black strap molasses. Dates and figs are here, also. Slight hint of tobacco. Slight yeasty, breadlike notes.
Big molasses presence, tastewise. Sweet, yet dark and dry. Nice level of maltiness makes it’s presence known. Very slight alcohol presence. Like the nose, you get a taste of tobacco. Caramel apples. Nice taste of black bread. Notes of dates and cherries.
Sadly, this is only a medium bodied beer. A nice, big, full body would make this one an extremely lush brew. Carbonation is a bit too crisp and therefore, short. Would benefit from smoother carbonation, as it would help it be so much more creamy.
Very drinkable, in general. The rich sweetness would keep you from throwing too many back in a single sitting, though.
I want more of this one.
DaSilky1 (1960), San Diego, California, USA Nov 16, 2009 Pours a nice, dark petrified amber with glimmers of red, a once frothy full head sinks to outline a pacman like creature. The nose is bready yet with underlying fruitiness akin to cherries with some spicy pumpernickel bread and lightly toasted grains. Body seems a bit thin at colder temps but fills out somewhat as it warms.. toasted grains, bread, and a bit of cherry ride along the flavor profile. Has a decent bready crispness, but it lay upon too thin of a palate, even at warmer temps I think the flavors seem to get lost and disappear quite rapidly. With more body, the flavors would be more pronounced...they’re good flavors, they’re just not pronounced enough. Hayo (4), Netherlands does not count Nov 15, 2009 Very malty, roasted flavor. Very little hop aroma. Nice caramel flavor. Good doppelbock. General66 (167), Streator, Illinois, USA Nov 9, 2009 Bottle enjoyed on a cloudy summer day. I have had this beer a handful of times, but I just got around to rating it now. Pours a cola-like brown color with a lot of mahogany tints and a small khaki head that disappears quickly. The aroma is very subtle. It has a roasty smell with a hint of sweet malt. It is extremely easy to drink and keeps you wanting more. It has a very roasty flavor with hints of sweet malt and caramel. Finishes very smooth. Overall, a very good beer and one of the best doppelbocks I have had to date. AlabastorJones (765), San Francisco, California, USA Nov 8, 2009 dark deep brown color with almost no head, big sweet malt nose, dark fruit and maple, sweet flavor but not at all cloying, dark fruits, mild roast, dries off a bit at the end. DonKi11uminati (49), , Indiana, USA Nov 1, 2009 This is a nice, interesting doppelbock. The flavor is complex and warming and the palate is thick and luscious. The flavor has lots of bread, caramel, nuts, raisins and even wood. My main complaint is that it’s all a little too sweet for me. Some more bitterness would be very nice here.
