4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 ALLOVATE (2098) - Butler, AUSTRALIA - JAN 21, 2005
This brewery/university is, to me, an absolute treasure to the German people, and this one gives homage to it’s fine brewing history. Poured into a Weihenstephaner Weiss glass, the body glistened a brilliant deep ruby brown. Small effervescent bubbles raced to the top to form a dense, inch thick, sandy head, that stuck firmly to the glass all the way down. An initial musty, cobweb aroma preceded wafts of cocoa, cinnamon, sweet malt and a little caramel. Mouth feel was excellent, rich rounded flavours of sweet caramelised sugars, coffee grains and husky burnt malt, dominated the palate. Medium bodied, medium-light carbonation, extremely well-balanced with a pleasant warming, malt finish. Not in your face, like many Doppelbocks, but quaffable and well crafted.

clear glowing mahogany with a layer of offwhite foam that sticks nicely. smell is all the usual doppelbock stuff but not a particularly intense or interesting version of it - toffee, malt, bit of alcohol, trace of minty hallertau. taste starts out with heaps of gooey caramel, then surprisingly cleaned up with sour berries, fading to a dry powdery chocolate aftertaste with some toast. all the yucky caramel stuff with none of the fat malty pleasures of a good doppel.
2.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 mullet (849) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - JAN 1, 2005
In short, not good. Nice colour but poor head retention. It’s a thin, roasty, toasty, sour, alcoholic dog’s breakfast. There’s some broccoli and marmite in there too. It’s neither malty nor bitter. The aroma hints at something interesting but it’s not. It’s certainly not offensive but I really didn’t like this at all.

Dark brown hue. Not cloyingly sweet like some doppelbocks on the market. It has that very distinct, grainy thing going on that is a trademark of this brewery (not my thing). Nice. Drinkable.

Ruby-brown colour. Sweet malt, raisin and tobacco aroma. Great malty flavour with some brown sugar and smokiness. [Toronto Christmas Party ’04]

Bottle, Doug’s, Christmas 2004 in Toronto. So this was the bottle Radek dropped?? Very strong malty and brandy aroma; dark brown colour. Not much alcohol in the taste, just lots of malty doppelbock goodness. Full bodied and really enjoyable. Thanks to whoever brought this one. Why couldn’t you drop the Keith’s Light instead?

Sweet malts, dry fruits. Nice strong lager character, woody and sweet just the way it should be. Medium roast, sweet, drinkable bock. Good beer.
