3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Korbinian poured a caramel brown into my pilsner glass. Generous amount of small rising carbonation bubbles. A tan 2 finger head formed on the pour that, with some time, faded do a thick cap. Leaves small spotty lacing. Looks good.
The smell starts with a a deep caramel sweetness. Along the way thereís some nuts, bananas, and some doughiness. Some raw grains show up as well as a mild vegetal aroma. Theres a mild metallic scent in there that doesnít belong but it fades as the beer warms. Smells good. The metallic and vegetal aromas do detract a little from the smell though.
The flavor is much like the smell without the funky vegetal flavor or metallic twang. More caramel and raw grains are the backbone and help to showcase the mild banana. The doughiness comes along mid-palate and everything ends up with some frothy milk chocolate and a touch of alcohol. Slightly acidic. Nice.
The mouthfeel seems to be a little on the thin side. Medium bodied but the thinness that starts mid-palate doesnt quite fit. There is a frothiness on the swallow that is unique and pleasant.
I could drink another one or two of these buts thatís probably all. It is an enjoyable beer that I will pick up again.
Overall this is a solid doppelbock. There are some unique characteristics you donít find in other doppelbocks, unfortuanately some of them donít add to the quality. Not as hearty as some others but still a good all around beer.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Rated 10/20/06: Found at a new store down in the big city to the south. Brown pour, very brown mild head and not much lacing. Aroma is of bakery sweet rolls, rather malty and sugary. Filling mouthfeel, real smooth finish bites a little. Flavor is too sugary sweet for my liking, but this being a dopplebock itís not a surprise. Bready with decent malt content itís one and out for this brew.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark mahogany and a rather excessive and frothy head. Sweet and malty aroma with just a hint of nuttiness. The flavor is forcefully malty with some notes of sweetness... candy or caramel like. The finish is cloying and almost salty, but this is a good beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A really good beer, very malty aroma and flavor. Not very bitter. Kind of creamy mouthfeel. Tastes almost like a mild chocolatey dessert. A must have for fans of German bocks.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A slightly hazed medium brown pour. A smell almost like sweet hay that has been barn dried. Pours the malt at first that goes to an almost light sour aroma. An almost thick sweetness that reminds me a bit of dates or raisins. A very smooth even palate and mouthfeel. A tad on the frothy side but overall very good.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: MAY 8, 2007 Very dark transparant red with a large fluffy head. Malty aroma of maple syrup, caramel, dark fruit, bubblegum and licorice. Strong & complex taste of maple syrup, some saltiness (soy sauce), spices, roastiness, and sweet caramel. Great complexity in the malt profile. Slight yeastiness showed up but the hops were far away in the background and barely noticable. Very long malty sweet & salt finish. Soft mouthfeel, velvety but not without carbonation. Quite different from the more traditional doppelbocks but very good.
