3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a nice one.
Appearance: Dark brown, looks suspiciously like Coca-Cola in my pilsener glass.
Aroma: A tad (but just a tad) on the weak side in my book. Nicely malty and caramelly.
Taste: Very nice! Raisins, caramel, a subtle but solid Noble Hop presence, nutty and toasty. I gave it a 8.5, which is not an option on the RB scale.
Overall: It’s no Curator or Celebrator to be sure, but for the price (much cheaper than either of those!) it can’t be beat.
I used it in the preparation of Doppelbock-Thai pork balls served with a spicy peanut sauce, with snap peas and rice noodles. A glass of it along with the meal was a divine pairing. This would be good with an array of desserts as well.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Somewhat different Doppelbock (label just says "dunkles Starkbier") with light beige, creamy, delicate head and dark coppery chestnut colour with ruby hue, clear. Powerful and complex aroma with impressions of coffee grounds, sherry, peat, blueberries, plums, chocolate, leather, cinnamon and cloves but also some oxidation (apparently the bottle has had its best time). Sweetish onset with caramelly and honeyish malt character, rich, drying and become bitterish after the middle with peppery hops, roasted coffee-like bitterness, a somewhat cloying candi sweetness and warming, little bit astringent alcohol. I should probably purchase a younger sample to get a better view on this.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Served on tap in a chalice glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown color with a one finger head of off white foam. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave a good level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a bready toasted malt smell along with a decent showing of some dark fruits of prune and raisin. Along with these aromas are some smells of cocoa, toffee, and caramel. A little bit of grass and some coffee are there as well, giving just a hint of bitterness to an otherwise sweet and roastey malted smelling brew.
Taste – The taste begins much crisper then I was anticipating, with a nice roasted malt base and a decent showing of some sweeter flavors of caramel and molasses. As the taste advances the roasted flavors remain rather strong while the initial caramel and molasses lose some ground, but with them being replaced by some light dark fruit flavors of plum and cherry. Some chocolate and a lighter coffee flavor work their way into the taste profile as well, and with a little bit of a grassy and herbal flavor coming to the tongue as well, one is left with a surprisingly crisper, but still quite roasty and sweet flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is slightly thinner and crisper side with a carbonation level that is on the average to slightly higher side. The slightly thinner body and higher carbonation actually work for this beer even though it is rather dark; as the feel really crates a crisp and very easy drinking but highly flavorful brew.
Overall – This is a very flavorful doppelbock with a very easy drinking and crisp feel in light of its abv. of 7.4 %. This is one nice drinker and one I will certainly come back to again.
