The name tells the story: our dark beer is brewed according to a tradition handed down from generation to generation. An aromatic beer with a malty character. An archetypal Bavarian beer.

BB 27.08.14. Poured a clear dark coppery brown colour with a two- to three-finger light tan frothy head that diminished quickly (compared to other Weihenstephaner beers tasted recently). Laced OK. Carbonation low with large bubbles. Aroma strongly of sweet malt with underlying faint molasses; all quite sweet. Taste mostly sweet caramel malt plus a hint of sweet fruits and also very subtle hops bitterness. Light body, a bit thin on the mouthfeel. Smooth, clean and with a slightly sweet finish.

On-tap at Weihenstephaner Berlin am Hackeschen Markt. Clear brown with a medium white head. Aroma of caramel, toasted malts and bread. Sweetish with mostly malty flavors, some dark bread notes, low bitterness. Medium-bodied, a bit watery. Well-made beer.

Shared a 50cl bottle from Ruppert (Luxembourg). Pours a clear brown colour with not much of a head. Aroma is liquorice, lightly roast and caramel. Average carbonation and medium to light body. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter with a long dry and bitter end. Not so balanced. Overall, a strange beer but drinkable.

OLD NOTES OCT 11, 2004 500ml Bottle. Aroma of burnt malt, sweet toffee and a bit of chocolate. Pours clear deep amberish brown body with solid off-white head. Decent flavour of caramel, slight chocolatey malt and with nutty and licorice flavours. The body tends to be a bit of the thin side. Overal it’s not too bad.

Colour of Daffyd Thomas’s "Bacardi & Cola", with a rough off-white head. The flavour is surprisingly bitter, with karamels lurking behind. Not too roasty, not too herbal. Just nice. The finish has an alcoholic touch of an old-timer asthma inhaler.

Mild flavours of caramel, very smooth, not too bad a drop. Could drink a coffee on a hot day.

Deep red/brown, thin cream head. Aromas of roast malt, caramel, brown sugar and a slight whiff of metallic lager yeast. Nice flavours of caramel and roasty malt with a residual sweetness. Hollow mid palate with a touch of bitterness towards the back of the palate. Good with pork knuckle. Perhaps just a touch too sweet by itself.
