The name tells the story: our dark beer is brewed according to a tradition handed down from generation to generation. An aromatic beer with a malty character. An archetypal Bavarian beer.

Clear almost russet dark brown with beige head. Good trails of carbonation bubbles. Smells of breadcrusts, flaked chocolate, bark and gorgeous dark malts. While the scent isn’t completely obvious, it is there and it is lovely. A first cooling rush upon drinking and then chocolate, carbonation and a tangy bite as it rushes past the sides of the tongue. Lingering chocolate, cocoa and eclair flavours at the finish, which is subtle and then fades a short while after. I could quite happily drink more of this.

Bottle from Thai supermarket. Deep nutty brown body, medium creamy egg shell-hued head. Nose is raisins, nuts and near-tart tones of roasty malts and hops combined. Taste is strong roasty malt tones with notes of coffee, burnt toast and nuts coming along towards the aftertaste. Nearly tart with accentuated roastiness-and-hops in the finish. A very nice dunkel from Weihenstephaner.

Bottle. Poured brown-red with a big light tan head. Aroma is a pleasant blend of malt, slightly-dark fruit, and sour dough(?). Taste is balance of light sweet/bitter/sour with lightly-toasted bread over it all. Very long clean bitter finish which surprised. The let down was the light/watery body slightly redeemed by soft tight carbonation. Please stop backing down on the flavour to appeal to the casual quoffers - could be so much more.

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a smallish tan coloured head. Aromas are relatively sweet with lots of grainy malt coming through. Minimal hops in support. Flavours are likewise relatively sweet with a light bitter finish. Medium mouthfeel.

From the bottle, pours a dark brown with a nice off white creamy head. Some nice spiciness in the aromas with some bready/doughy undertones. Flavour is nicely sweet, malty and some caramel toastiness with a bit of bitter tanginess in the finish. Body is quite light.

Tap @ de Paas, Den Haag. Clear amber to ebony pour, solid creamy off-white head. Aroma of roasted malts, hazlenut and ash. Flavor is watery, caramellish sweet and nice roasted bitter. Good balance. Nice clean and drinkable brew.

Half liter @ Weihenstephaner. This one is an amazing dunkel. It is sweet and malty, but not too much, the hops save it and it turns into an easy-drinker.

Draft at De Paas. Dark amber pour with off white head. Nice enough beer.
