The name tells the story: our dark beer is brewed according to a tradition handed down from generation to generation. An aromatic beer with a malty character. An archetypal Bavarian beer.

The DM & Hotstuff’s European Honeymoon trip beer number 46. This draft brew from the monastery in Freising Germany poured a medium sized head of finely sized white colored mostly lasting bubbles that left behind an excellent lacing and a carbonated transparent brown colored body. The aroma was mild with brown beer malty notes and the mouth feel was initially tingly with a mild caramel malt bite in its otherwise smooth finish. The flavor was typically like a dunkel, but on the thin side and therefore was not much to behold.

Pours dark brown color with off white head. Caramel, malt. Watery texture. Could be better.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2005 Deep amber-red clear under a medium size pale beige medium lasting head. Faint caramel and roasted malt becoming more treacle and honey like on warming. Medium thin body. Mild sweetish roasted malt and lighter hop bitter flavours. Light dry finish. The kind of lighter flavoured beer you could drink all day but it lacks punch for my taste.

Dark colour with good off white head. Aroma is very malty, and the flavor is made up by toffee and hints of coffee. Palate is nice.

Roasted malty caramel and slightly hoppy aroma. Hazy brown coloured with a lasting, off-white head. Taste is sweet, caramel malty, slightly roasted, hoppy. Bit sticky. Average dunkel.

Pours dark brownred with a disappearing off-white head. Mostly sweet rather heavy rye and malt aroma with spicy notes. Sweet flavor as well, notes of malt and grass with hints of spices and coffee. Little watery mouthfull. An all right dunkel!

500ml bottle served at perfect temperature at an outdoor cafe in Freising, Bavaria. Thin, off-white head over a deep mahogany coloured body. Malty to the nose. Suitable sweet malty flavour with notes of cocoa and hops. Dry ending. Rather foamy mouthfeel. Easy drinking. Not among the best German dunkels (24.06.2007).

Shared a bottle at Plonk. My ventures into lager territory. Dark lager, has some flavour but still a bit mild on taste... not my style.

The label states that this is brewed for them by Hofbräu München. A sweet, nutty beer with a pleasant hoppy finish, but not outstanding in any way.
