2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 3fourths (6948) - Straßgiech, Bavaria, GERMANY - MAY 19, 2013
bottle best by 03.11.13. brilliantly clear gold body with a fine-bubbled short and foamy white head and beautifully cascading carbonation when the glass is tilted and swirled. first whiff is some nutty Munich malt and honey-scented pilsner malt, good calcium and light sulfur (though not eggy) content, but then the cooked cabbage and vegetables come through. sadly the vegetal notes are stronger in the mouth than the nose, and though the oily nut and toasted cereal character is nice these kraut and vegetable green flavors just kill it. mostly dry and the carbonation is nicely creamy and frothy, but the flavor has some serious problems, very subtly sourish. Kundmuller was an all-around great brewery the last time I was in Franconia (each I had was about 4.0-level other than the Keller-Pils), but this just doesn’t seem the same. watery and flabby in the finish with some soured nut and stewed grains and cooked cabbage. I bet the Germans love that in their beer.
2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Ernest (5623) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - MAY 16, 2013
Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting.
Body is light yellow.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, husks), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), with a light note of soap.
Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter, slightly husky.
Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, slightly metallic.
Pretty mediocre...a bit husky and metallic, bland, light and watery, etc. Comes off as plain ol’ Helles to me.

on tap at the brewpub. i settled on this one as my session beer before sleeping it off upstairs, incidentally a really good deal on accommodation here. anyways, close to clear golden with a persistent splotchy head reminiscent of czech pils; grassy, herbaceous aroma; light on the fizz so you can slam it down fast; just enough bitterness to keep you wanting more. grows on you as a good session beer should
