2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
bottle best by 09.11.13. clear pale straw body with a short white head. aroma hops are lightly grassy but become more cabbage-like as it breathes; malt has a lot of saltine cracker and stale white bread notes; aroma is very minerallic and has a character much like cement, silt and gravel, as well as a very distinct cigarette ashtray smell (actually more like the stale cig smell you have in clothes from a few nights ago when you chain smoked). medium-light body, very dry, medium bitterness. crunchy, toasty, grainy and coarse malt throughout; minimal hop flavor; cement mix minerality and ashtray malt flavor with a lingering cooked cabbage / sourkraut-flavored finish.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2013 Bottle.
Head is initially average sized, frothy, white, mostly lasting.
Body is clear light yellow.
Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers, herbs), with light notes of lemon/lime zest, soap, DMS.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, husky, slightly unclean.
Light to medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation.
Comes off more like a standard Helles than a country beer. Sadly my second sample didn’t prove as enjoyable...lots of soapy and vegetal/DMS notes in the nose, and a more stark, semi-grainy mouth experience. Very weird. I knew my old rating was too good to be true after having since tried several other products from this brewery and finding these same sorts of flaws in them. Maybe it was a case of first-day-in-Franconia excitement and being elated by the hop bouquet in this one? I sure did spend plenty o’ time with that first review and didn’t find these messy bits. I understand that there are multiple batches out too, but honestly I can’t explain it. See also Rittmayer Kellerbier. Sigh.
