When you get to that time of day when that cup of hot coffee is no longer the answer, and you need something with a little extra kick, plait your bear, stick on your eye patch and grab a Black Perle. This milk stout is chock full of roasty malts, milk sugar, hopped with hand full’s of perle plundered from the unsuspecting and aged on a chest full of Zamorana coffee beans.

Huge frothy/rocky light brown head fills my glass And leaves patches of lacing. Pitch black pour, clear. Milk coffee, lightly roasted malt, distant pine notes, ash, soap. Medium body, dry, slightly bitter, soft, low carbonation, juniper stays long. Yarr!

Dark beer with minimal head. Ground coffee and dark chocolate on the nose. Light to medium body and not particularly mouth coating. Taste is predominantly coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malt. A session stout at 3.8%

On tap at Dorking beer fest. Pours opaque black with a small beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, a little caramel and weak coffee. Nice smooth mouth feel. Slightly bitter coffee, malts and a sweetish finish. nicely balanced.

Cask at Craft in Clerkenwell. Thin frothy tan head. Mahogany body. Chocolate, roast, coffee, licorice. Bitter and alkaline. Bitter finish. Not a fan of this.

Bottle at home. Jet black with a very thin small tan head, immediately the coffee aroma hits you and the taste doesn’t falter, coffee beans, cocoa roasted malts and chocolate milkshake. Lovely stout.

500ml bottle from Favourite bear. Deep brown colour with a creamy tan head. Aroma has coffee and chocolate so does the taste. Fantastic.

Aroma: intense coffee, dark chocolate, toasted malts. Appearance: black, massive, frothy, beige head. Taste: light sweet and bitter. Palate: light bitters intensify, coffee, dark chocolate again, then some sweets appear in the background, lacto, milk chocolate, dry finish. Overall: nice Sweet Stout, great palate. Bottle from The Bottle Shop, Bermondsey.
