When you get to that time of day when that cup of hot coffee is no longer the answer, and you need something with a little extra kick, plait your bear, stick on your eye patch and grab a Black Perle. This milk stout is chock full of roasty malts, milk sugar, hopped with hand full’s of perle plundered from the unsuspecting and aged on a chest full of Zamorana coffee beans.

Batch 0025 bottle from Queens Head. Big head, toasty coffee aroma. Very smooth palate and nice easy drinking rounded taste. Little sweetness overpowering malts, so guess I prefer trad dry stouts but a very drinkable offering.

Keg at the Euston tap. Opaque black with a persistent light tan head. Aroma is berry and light roast. Flavour has a little veg, but is big on the citrus hop and roast. Palate is medium full with decent carbonation. Good dry mineral finish. Decent black IPA.

Bottle at the Exmouth Arms, London on 21 September. Poured a thick black colour with a large, dense tan head. Aroma of vanilla pods, dark chocolate and sweet coffee. Good thick mouth feel. Initial flavours were a little on the sweet side for me; nutty with cocoa, milk chocolate and biscuity malt. Palate was nicer, more bitter coffee, roasted malt and peppery spice. Pretty good for a style I’m not normally a huge fan of.

Cask-conditioned at the Gryphon, Bristol 19/9/2013. Opaque and almost black in colour, with a tight, off-white head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and a touch of grassy hop. Surprisingly full mouth feel for such a low ABV beer, with plenty of dark chocolate, a hint of lactose and roasty, dryish finish. Excellent.

Cask, half pint at tap takeover, Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico. Jet black body. Shiny surface, dotted spots to the glassware. Vanilla sweet malty nose with hints of lactose. Coffee and modest lactose flavours. Mild, dry, roasted end. Pretty okay stout, not too sweet and not too thin bodied (London 12.08.2013).

Bottle picked up at ’Jacks’, Westholme Stores, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon. Consumed at a wonderful house owned by the Blackwell family in Appleton, Oxon, Saturday 31st August 2013 Black in colour with a large sticky frothy head light beige head that sort of collapsed in the middle. Wonderfully creamy and rich beer with milkyness, coffee and a pleasant rich vein of roasty and tasty goodness, really quite lovely. Thoroughly enjoyed this beer. It’s great that Weird Beard can do beers such as this so very well alongside the strong and very hoppy numbers that they also do. A7 A5 T8 P4 Ov16 4.0
