When you get to that time of day when that cup of hot coffee is no longer the answer, and you need something with a little extra kick, plait your bear, stick on your eye patch and grab a Black Perle. This milk stout is chock full of roasty malts, milk sugar, hopped with hand full’s of perle plundered from the unsuspecting and aged on a chest full of Zamorana coffee beans.

Cask (Gallows Bird, Espoo, Real Ale Festival 2014)
Enormous morning coffee aroma. Smooth palate, carbonation low. Very drinkable. Great balance, not too sweet, and not saying "milk" - and as I’m not a huge fan of sweet lactosey milk stouts, that’s a good thing. The coffee likewise is everywhere, but it’s not in-your-face, nicely balanced. Lovely mild coffee ale.

Clear dark black brown color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, burnt, coffee, strong coffee, dusty coffee, light chocolate. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, ash, dark roasted, dusty coffee. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20130330]

Bottle. Black with a lovely half inch of tan head. Coffee is definitely the main attraction, but it’s soft and the sweetness from the lactose makes this easy drinking. Nice roast malts, good chocolate, and a bitter finish. Slightly thinner, but bulked up with an oily mouthfeel and a vigorous but soft carbonation.

UPDATED: MAR 31, 2014 Cask conditioned handpump Craven Arms Birmingham 17/12/13. A black coloured beer with a little beige head. Very dominated by coffee especially in the nose. Just about manageable for this non coffee drinker. A good body and tons of flavour even if it is nearly all coffee and certainly no lactose qualities. Acceptable. Score 3.6

Cask at Hack and Hop. Pours black with a small, very firm khaki head. Nose is bitter chocolate, vanilla beans, sea salt and mild aniseed. Taste is espresso, roasted coffee beans, vanilla essence, moderate liquorice and a touch of grass. Lactose in full view. Thin mouth feel with very bitter finish. Not bad

Batch 0025 bottle from Queens Head. Big head, toasty coffee aroma. Very smooth palate and nice easy drinking rounded taste. Little sweetness overpowering malts, so guess I prefer trad dry stouts but a very drinkable offering.

Keg at the Euston tap. Opaque black with a persistent light tan head. Aroma is berry and light roast. Flavour has a little veg, but is big on the citrus hop and roast. Palate is medium full with decent carbonation. Good dry mineral finish. Decent black IPA.
