When you get to that time of day when that cup of hot coffee is no longer the answer, and you need something with a little extra kick, plait your bear, stick on your eye patch and grab a Black Perle. This milk stout is chock full of roasty malts, milk sugar, hopped with hand full’s of perle plundered from the unsuspecting and aged on a chest full of Zamorana coffee beans.

500ml bottle from Ales by Mail

Batch 0003, Bottled MAR 2013 - Pours pitch black with a tiny white head. Aroma of roasted malts, coffee beans, sweet milk chocolate and hints of vanilla. Taste is smooth, milky and watery with hints of bitterness and roastiness. Finish is light bodied and has hints of coffee and milk chocolate with some roastiness. Quite complex considering the low abv, but feels quite watery and light.

(Cask at Cock Tavern, Hackney, London, 25 Apr 2013) Black colour with foamy, beige head. Roasted, malty nose with freshly ground coffee, dark chocolate, cocoa and ashes. Impressive coffee aromas. Malty, roasted taste with notes of fresh coffee, dark chocolate, ashes and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Medium body, quite dry. Loads of coffee character, with very fresh flavours. Excellent stout.

Cask at CBI, London on 28th April 2013. Solid black with thin tan film and pattern lace. Coffee and cocoa aroma. Rich coffee, spice and chocolate in-mouth. Rather sweeter aftertaste with berries and tanginess yet coffee returns late. Excellent. Smooth mouthfeel and fair body.

[Cask at the Reading Beer Festival] Brown-black with a moderate tan head. Coffee is evident in the aroma with obvious roasted malts, but it feels like they’ve just been added to try and cover up a rather inferior, slightly sour base beer. Don’t think the hops used really work that well with the coffee, either. An unbalanced beer with a great smell.

Idiosynkrasie (3812) - Bielefeld, GERMANY - MAY 1, 2013
500ml bottle [3.7% abv]. Almost black colour with average, creamy, fairly lasting, moderately lacing, beige head. Cautiously roasty dark malty aroma with a coffee/cappuccino note. Taste is minimally sweet dark malty, very good coffee/cappuccino note, hints of roast, a sourish touch.

Leighton (10985) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - APR 28, 2013
Cask at the Cock Tavern - London. Pours dark brown with a thick, mocha cream head. Quite a bit of mocha on the nose, soft roast. Light to medium sweet flavor with char, some chalky roast, slight minerals and baking cocoa. Light bodied with smooth, silky carbonation. Fairly earthy and bitter to finish, lots of bittersweet baking cocoa, moderate toast, some burnt coffee grounds. A really nice, depthy and sessionable stout.
