Black India Pale Ale. Sounds wrong, but tastes so right! An innovative new style challenges your preconceptions about how a dark beer should taste? Fade to Black is darker than a Metallica album cover and hoppier than a box of frogs on pogo sticks, this beer has a fascinating interplay between the fruity hops, dark toasted notes from the malt and the spicy rye.

Ingredients:
Grains: Pale, Crystal, Crystal Rye, Chocolate, Carafa III
Hops: Summit, Citra, Sorachi Ace

Bottle from my friend, many thanks Daniel. 6.5% ABV. Very dark chestnut color with thick light beige head. Roasted malt, citrus hops in aroma. Roasted malt, coffee, licorice, citrus, resiny hops. Long resiny hoppy bitter finish. Tasty.

330 ml bottle pours dark brown with small tan head. Aroma is sweet, hints of pine nut, rosehip, cocoa and roasted malt. Well balanced beer. Bitterness, coffee, burnt toast or marmite flavours come through followed by dry mouthwatering burnt caramel and grapefruit citrus freshness. Having this with a nice thick steak on a hot summer’s day. Very refreshing.

Backlog rating from bottle. It pours a deep brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, grains, piney hops, citrus peel and berries. Taste is quite bitter with roasted malts, hops and notes of coffee and persimmon. Body is medium with good carbonation. Overall, good BIPA

Fra flaske (thanks, Cimbasso!) på RBHD-samling på Tau okt-14: brunsvart, og med storboblet kort beige skum. Deilig aroma av citrus, furu, kvalitetskaffe og portvin (vanilje?). Like god smak uten å være overhumlet. Litt lakris sniker seg inn mot slutten.

0,33l bottle at RBHD-gathering, Tau, Oct-2014. Clear, deep ruby mahogany body with a light brown film. Vanilla, pollen, port on the nose. Dry, mellow coffee, dried fruits and faint liquorice on the nose. Medium to full bodied. Long aromatic finish.

Shared 330 ml bottle at local tasting. Black colour, tan head. Pleasant aroma of American hops, citrus and pine. Also roasty notes. The flavour has piney hops and roasty coffee notes, but they don’t blend in quite as harmoniously as in some other black IPAs. Still a good beer.

Bottle from Beer Ritz courtesy of the parents. Pours black with a tan head. Start off with some nice pine notes and a little spice before coffee notes. The pine seems to make a return in the bitter aftertaste. Really nice.
