Cask, Keg & Bottle Conditioned; Regular. ABV may vary.

Black India Pale Ale. Sounds wrong, but tastes so right! An innovative new style challenges your preconceptions about how a dark beer should taste? Fade to Black is darker than a Metallica album cover and hoppier than a box of frogs on pogo sticks, this beer has a fascinating interplay between the fruity hops, dark toasted notes from the malt and the spicy rye.

03.JUL-2014, bottle @hotel room in Heatrow, from Oddbins, London Bridge. Very dark Brown and dense with a lasting tan head. Aroma is hops, soap and chocolate. Taste is very fresh hops, tea, chocolate. Not all that bitter, not really hard roasted. Medium body and soft carbonation. A bit strange for the style but OK.

This is proper aggressive beer. Sticky and smokey. Grassy hoppiness is pretty solid. Not sure about the style myself but I’ll dig more of Weird Beard boys!

Aroma: dark chocolate, light coffee, toasted malts. Appearance: dark brown / black, small beige creamy head. Taste: medium sweet. Palate: sweets intensify, very sticky, toffee, caramel, chocolate, coffee again, average-long duration, full body, low carbonation. Overall: great Black IPA, very nice aroma. Bottle from BottleDog Kings Cross, Holborn.

Bottle. Almost black body, clear looking and with a dense, light beige head. There’s a faint touch of cooked vegetables in the aroma, but mostly it’s roasted. Pine cones and resins in the back. It’s quite bitter, with pine cones, resins and roasted malts. Full body, soft carbonation, pretty dry, with roasted malts and bitterness in the finish. Well, too roasted I think, else quite decent. 140608

Bottle from Spirited Wines, Manchester. Black with a large bubbly off-white head. Has a potent tropical fruit hoppiness, It’s strong tasting with a light roasted malt evident, but still with a good dose from the tropics.

Marstonlad (386) - Helsinki, FINLAND - MAY 10, 2014
Bottle at Janoinen Lohi, Helsinki. Pours black with a little white head. Aroma features a combination of hoppy and roasty elements; notes of coffee, chocolate and grass. Taste is initially sweet, later bitter. The balance between hoppy and malty flavours is very good, moderate to high bitterness. The palate is medium bodied and a bit sticky, moderate carbonation. This black IPA has both hoppy and roasty notes, very nice.
