Black India Pale Ale. Sounds wrong, but tastes so right! An innovative new style challenges your preconceptions about how a dark beer should taste? Fade to Black is darker than a Metallica album cover and hoppier than a box of frogs on pogo sticks, this beer has a fascinating interplay between the fruity hops, dark toasted notes from the malt and the spicy rye.

Ingredients:
Grains: Pale, Crystal, Crystal Rye, Chocolate, Carafa III
Hops: Summit, Citra, Sorachi Ace

Perhaps I got a bad bottle of this, but it’s nowhere near what is described in the other reviews. Pours nearly black with moderate tan head which dissipates slowly. Almost neutral malty aroma with hints of coffee. Tastes of dark chocolate and coffee, with a bitter dryness. Finishes dry and bitter.

(33 cl bottle from Brewbot Belfast; BBD: June 2016; Batch #198; ABV: 6,5%) Poured at fridge temperature into a stemmed burgundy glass reveals a pitch black body with one finger tan head. Good retention and beautiful lace. Aroma is of sprucy hops with a backdrop of t toasted malt - gives me associations with the dark electric quality of the Fundamental Blackhorn and Mikkeller’s Beer Hop Breakfast. Oily texture, soft carbonation, medium body and a lingering bitter finish. Flavour is moderately bitter but retains a high degree of drinkability. A well-made beer from Weird Beard!

UPDATED: DEC 28, 2015 Bottle at Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Ink black with hints of indigo. Opaque as the soul of the damned. Chocolate malt, pine needles in the scent. A wonderful tropical fruit note with liquorice and hints of stone fruit. Taste is incredible... Christmas stocking sweet gives way to a juicy intense bitterness. Flavours as diverse as espresso, white grape and prunes. This is an incredibly balanced BIPA. An incredible beer. One of my favourites in a long, long time.------- cask at CASK pub and kitchen. Still an incredible beer but the intense properties feel muted under cask dispense. Rated 4.0, overall average drops from 4.7 to 4.3.
