Black India Pale Ale. Sounds wrong, but tastes so right! An innovative new style challenges your preconceptions about how a dark beer should taste? Fade to Black is darker than a Metallica album cover and hoppier than a box of frogs on pogo sticks, this beer has a fascinating interplay between the fruity hops, dark toasted notes from the malt and the spicy rye.

Ingredients:
Grains: Pale, Crystal, Crystal Rye, Chocolate, Carafa III
Hops: Summit, Citra, Sorachi Ace

(33 cl bottle from Brewbot Belfast; BBD: June 2016; Batch #198; ABV: 6,5%) Poured at fridge temperature into a stemmed burgundy glass reveals a pitch black body with one finger tan head. Good retention and beautiful lace. Aroma is of sprucy hops with a backdrop of t toasted malt - gives me associations with the dark electric quality of the Fundamental Blackhorn and Mikkeller’s Beer Hop Breakfast. Oily texture, soft carbonation, medium body and a lingering bitter finish. Flavour is moderately bitter but retains a high degree of drinkability. A well-made beer from Weird Beard!

Bottle at Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Ink black with hints of indigo. Opaque as the soul of the damned. Chocolate malt, pine needles in the scent. A wonderful tropical fruit note with liquorice and hints of stone fruit. Taste is incredible... Christmas stocking sweet gives way to a juicy intense bitterness. Flavours as diverse as espresso, white grape and prunes. This is an incredibly balanced BIPA. An incredible beer. One of my favourites in a long, long time.

Dark brown color. Big coffee todfee and caramel nose. Big nuttiness in the mouth with lots of roasted malts, but lacks hoppiness and bitterness. Still very admirable.

Bottle. Pours a black colour with a foamy tan head. Aroma of mango, orange, some brown sugar, some cocoa, subtle coffee, roasted malts and subtle pine, kind of like skittles. Taste of grapefruit, orange, roasted malts, liquorice, some chocolate, subtle coffee and blackcurrant. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. A roasted bitterness with some fruitiness in the finish. So smooth and easy drinking, great roasted bitterness with some citrus flavours. A good black IPA but more hoppiness would be perfect.

330ml bottle. Drank from a La Chouffe tulip...Grapefruit hops dance through roast malt and chocolate ..like a mini rave . Large khaki head ...i’ve seen blacker more bad ass looking beers . dry roast coffee , lots of chocolate , rich pungent hops lurk in a dimension that mixes well ..fuck these black ipa’s all taste the same and i do like their simplistic mesh of two fucken styles . a classy black and tan. CDA. watever

Bottle at home... pours black with a tan head with lots of lacing. Citrus aromas dominate, grapefruit and orange... thick and creamy in the mouth, with slightly roasted chocolate malts with a citrus hop backbone. Nice burnt bitter finish. Great stuff.
