Sehr fein.

The beer pours out of the bottle in a cloudy dirty golden colour with steady head and medium body. Aroma of hops and barley. Taste of mild hops, basement, barley, bread, nuts, mild fruits and caramel. Mild but aromatic finsih. Easy and nice to drink, a smopoth enjoyment.

50cl screwtop, Sagasser Coburg. - Pours a brackish red-brown, cardboard caramalt nose, diluted Vitamalz. Taste is more pleasant, though heavy on sweet caramalts, with fainter earthy hints of nuts and that typically Franconian malt+hop quality of spicy white meats, like liquid Jägerschnitzel, maybe even Zigeunerschnitzel in this case. Very quaffable, but you realise with every of maybe 4 gulps this is mostly sugars. A decent enough sweet Land/Kellerbier, now part of the hit-and-miss series of so-so beers the DLG has awarded a gold medal, even when containing hop extract, catering to received tastes and set palates.

Draught, billed as "Puls-Brau dunkles Kellerbier" at Gasthof Neuner, Nov. 2012: Beaming coppery-russet. Creamy off-white halo of foam. Solid nose of marzipan, almond skin, sassafras, creamed coffee, breadcrust and ripe plum. Soft, delicate and creamy carbonation. Marzipan and a fluffy nougat maltiness immediately unfolds on the tongue, with relaxed fruitiness slathering a sturdy, deeply browned biscuit anchor. Delectable notes of toffee and unsweetened chocolate abound. Hugely candyish and increasingly succulent in its tropical fruitiness, though a juicy and deep-rooted dextrinous clutch beautifully counterbalances the esters. Dab of hazelnut and creamed coffee contribute more intricacy to the soft malt character. Finishes clean and well-attenuated, with a dialed-in sweetness of fluffy cocoa-dusted toast and vanilla cookie sealed with a gentle, tealike hoppiness. A quaffable malt bomb, with really attractive fruit character. Solid rendition.

UPDATED: APR 26, 2013 draft as Puls-Brau dunkles Kellerbier at Gasthof Neuner in Ebesnfeld. I have no idea if this is the correct listing. medium chestnut brown or dark amber body (hard to tell in a croc, so don’t trust me). medium-sized tan head. toasted grains, toffee sugar and nutty malt nose with rich and robust notes of tobacco and coffee. rich and tangy, medium sweetness, rich carbonation, crunchy malt, tingle of German hops in the finish. this is a well-executed baked apple and pie crust red malt semi-dark kellerbier with bright hop expression. the sample is no doubt fresh and certainly benefits from it’s condition.

8,8,9,9,7,9 - 8,65 - 30/10/12
