3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 jfb (2569) - GERMANY - DEC 23, 2010
(bottle) pours a clear copper colour with a frothy off-white head. almost pungent aroma of sweet dark fruits and tobacco, with notes of roasted grainy malts, peanuts and herbal hops. flavour is the same, with a slightly alcoholic astringent bitter finish. heavy-bodied with average carbonation.
3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 thirstyrabbit (719) - Tallinn, ESTONIA - NOV 23, 2010
Bottle. Mahogany body, good head. Aroma has malt and dried fruit. The full-bodied malty taste is simple yet satisfying. Nice with food, too alcoholic for "just drinking".
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 fidel (1302) - Livermore, California, USA - OCT 21, 2010
Poured dark brownish amber, caramel, dark fruits, nutty, little maple, little bready, slight apple.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Hair6a11 (1156) - Illinois, USA - SEP 8, 2010
Bottle: Pours a Dark Amber/Brown - Light Off white/tan head at the top, smell is sweeter than I expected, certainly. Aroma is maple syrup, sweet breads, and figs, flavors are similar, to be certain. But first, the brew is lighter than I expected - mouthfeel is medium, i suppose. It starts a little bitter at first, like a port, with a certain breadiness, but then the sweetness comes out as well, and there is toffee or syrup, combined with dark fruits. Nice brew overall - Bottle didn’t match the artwork so I continued to question whether I was drinking this beer, but I triple checked myself. Bottle is actually a swing top, coupled with poor artwork of a jolly monk - well, whatever works.
2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 3fourths (6949) - Straßgiech, Bavaria, GERMANY - AUG 8, 2010
500ml, bottle conditioned. medium-dark caramel colored body, low carbonation as in the marzen, little to no head. nose centers around haplessly sweetened grape and apple juice, with the grape flavoring and what seems like wood oil coating the mouth throughout. chewy but flabby body. horrible flavor. drainpour.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 JohnnyJ (3532) - San Diego, California, USA - JUL 24, 2010
Bottle. Copper pour, white head. Sweet malts, chewy fruit bread, caramel, and lightly nutty. Meh, okay.
3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 talon1117 (1152) - Fort Collins, Colorado, USA - JUL 14, 2010
The pour is a translucent, dark amber color with a moderate, beige, frothy head which settles to a very thin, frothy layer and leaves some frothy, lace rings. The nose is certainly bready and rich with sweet caramel, sweet rolls, some raisin, light nutmeg, and a bit of almonds. Typical doppel, the flavor carries plenty of malt richness; again very sweet caramel, honeyed rolls, candied raisins, maybe some molasses, maybe some plum, and a slight almond note. The palate is medium to full, creamy, and soft to lively. The finish is sweet with raisin, caramel, and some light almonds. Typical rich doppel which is nice, but the best of the style have a bit of complexity and depth. Very nice German example and very nice but no Celebrator.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jb (1809) - Rochester, New York, USA - JUL 1, 2010
Heavy caramel nose. Also a bit of fruitiness. Appearance is cider colored with a minimal head. Taste is very doughy, chewy, graham crackers, very satisfying but very simple. I like my doppelbocks more complex and nuanced but this is still a nice beer.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 notalush (4173) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAY 30, 2010
50cl swingtop - cloudy brown beer - a rich and creamy doppel that is sweet but never cloying - nose of caramelized sugars/toffee, raisin, date, some earthy/mustiness - very creamy body - clean sweetness, caramel, raisin, fig - some yeasty/doughiness - moderate spicy character and tartness bookend these qualities, preparing and then cleansing the palate of most of the sweetness - quite tasty.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 CanIHave4Beers (2495) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - MAY 27, 2010
Pours a beautiful deep red color with a big white head. The aroma is clean and malty with some apple and mild roastiness. There are fruity and molasses notes in there as well. The flavor is a good sticky maltiness with some spicy hops with a mild roastiness, some molasses, and a bit of alcohol. The palate is full and a little sticky but with a lively enough carbonation.
