Liquid does not break the Fast - was a rule of fasting at the times of the Benedictine monks in Weissenohe. For this, now we owe the Mirror Carp as Fasting food and the strong Doppelbock for liquid intake during this barren time. In this tradition, we have brewed for you our strong Bonator the dark Doppelbock, physically and spiritually strengthening during the "staaden" time. A dark Doppelbock, spicy and strong as the tradition requires. Suitable for: goulash, pork shoulder, roasted meat, hearty snacks and strong game dishes

Hazy copper brown pour with a 1 finger, creamy beige head. Aroma is caramel, toffee, yeasty, crusty bread, brown sugar, and some planty, herbal hops. Flavor is caramel, toffee, butterscotch, light sweet corn, toast, doughy yeast, autolyzed yeast, bread crust, caramelized brown sugar, light earthy, planty hops and dull, spicy hops to the finish. Medium body, slightly chalky, creamy and chewy feel and moderate carbonation. Its a strange Doppelbock with tons of yeast character, but I liked it.

Rating #1279 - 10.11.2014 Bottle from the CBI Archives - about 4 months past BB date. Dark brown pour with a tan head that fades fairly slowly. Mild-medium carbonation. Aroma is coffee, hint of toffee and roasted malt. Taste is all over the map for me, yeast, wheat, mild smoke, bit of a malty boozy disaster. Will rerate fresher, or properly stored.

Miedziane, klarowne piwo o średniej pianie, która redukuje się do zera. Aromat słodowy plus ciemne owoce, głownie wiśnia, bardzo zbliżony go aromatu mocnych belgijskich piw. W smaku znowu słodycz i ciemne owoce, alkohol dobrze ukryty, piwo pełne, wyraźnie czuć wysoki ekstrakt. Goryczka niska.

Half liter bottle poured into a dimpled stein. Nice looking deep brown dopplebock, well rounded and a bit sweet. By no means overwhelming, but rich and malty and fruity. (Note to American craft brewers: not all beer has to be overhopped and bitter to be enjoyable, give it a rest occasionally.) Nutty, bready, very filling, easy drinking... I believe that the rotund monk on the label is a warning sign for all who like this enjoyable brew. Gives the ABV as 8.2, which is assuredly well hidden.

Swing-top at Schmitz. Cloudy dark brown with a short beige head. Beautiful Munich-malty nose with plenty of cherry and grape, just classic DB. In the mouth it’s the same, medium sweetness over light bitterness. Loads of deep Munich, brown sugar character, slight dark bread, medium-full body, not showing much alcohol. Full malty body and a great treat (though I may be feeling generous with the score).

4 oz pour from a rubber clad gravity keg at ChurchKey. Courtesy of Doug, thanks! Clear amber with off-white head. Aromas of malt, light nutty notes. Tastes of stone fruit, malt. Light body with a dry finish.
