(bottle) pours a clear amber-brown colour with a frothy off-white head. aroma of dark fruit, caramel and barnyard, with a hint of earth and mint. flavour is mostly the same, with a hint of grainy roasted malts, liquorice and dark fruit. medium-bodied with average carbonation.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
New Beer Distributors, NY 50cl ($4.50): Pours a copper color with a whitish head. Aroma is caramel, malt, and a modicum of hops. Taste is quite sweet, and it leaves somewhat of an aftertaste that is quite sugary. Body is medium. Not bad, but easily forgettable.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: FEB 25, 2015 50cl Maruhn - Surprisingly tasty, dry, potent Dunkel with some subtle aromas to back up the balanced full roasty Vollbier taste - verges into Belgian dark ale territory, but with more bitterness and contained ABV. Nice label. One of my gateway beers to the rich Franconian beer world.
tuesday, january 15, 2013// Rerate 02/2015, bottle bb07/2015: sourish bread crust notes, nuts, somehow less shiny than first time but still natural and very decent.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 11/20
Deep gold to light amber in color (not sure why it is called a Dunkel). Head faded to nothing almost immediately. Light malty aroma with some DMS characteristics. Malty with some flavors associated with under attenuation. Seems much more in line with a Maibock than any kind of Dunkel. Not bad, but I would not go out of my way to find it again.

A very interesting beer. Pours a beautiful clear amber red. Smells of black cherries and caramel. Taste is similar, cherries, caramel and vanilla. Had on New Years.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bonifatius Dunkel. Yes, this is a Franconian Dunkel, I suppose. And it is indeed a bit more exciting than the incredible sea of boredom where the world of Dunkles sits upon. Sweet, dry, nutty, really creamy. The hoppy touch, a little bitterness, not too much, breaks the Dunkel monotony, making a tremendous difference.

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from South Lyndale Liquor. A light brown color and low carbonation. The aroma has malt and lager yeast but there is also some light spice I can’t identify, along with the lightest nutmeg. Rich palate and lots of sweet malt. A very good dunkel, and unusual with the light spice. Another reminder that it is hard to get a quality dunkel outside of central Europe.
