Maker: Klosterbrauerei Weißenohe,Weißenohe, Germany *** Beer: Bonifatius Dunkel (bottled, 500ml) *** Style: Dunkles *** ALC.VOL.: 5.1% *** Colour: Dark mahogany, clear; huge beige head. *** Nose: Rye bread, caramel, mild roasted malts. *** Texture: Medium body, hardly watery. *** Taste: Some roasted malts, chocolate, caramel, complemented by floral hops. The latter grow stringer towards the middle, bitterness however is very moderate. Light caramel in the background. Dark chocolate, roasted malts in the finish, a bit more bitter than before. Aftertaste pretty much the same, with warm caramel lasting the longest. *** Impressions: Perfectly adequate Dunkel with a pleasantly chocolaty bent; not very complex, but very satisfying. A beer for the later afternoon.

16.9 oz. swingtop bottle picked up on a recent holiday beer run. Pours a deep dark ruby/mahogany color with very dark orange edges when held to a light source ans a one finger frothy off white head with decent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting ring that leaves sporadic cunks of soapy lacing behind. Slightly earthy aroma with hints of chocolate and caramel malt, rye, light cherry and grassy hops. Subtle toffee and hazelnut presence in the nose. Soft carbonation up front with a lightr body than I expected. Prominent spice up front that lingers over the sweet lightly roasted malt body into a bone dry finish. Hints of christmas cake, spice, caramel and rye maltiness, cinnamon, brown sugar and dark sour cherries. Also there is some toffee ands subtle nutty flavor. Pretty sweet and spicy but is somewaht blanced by the malt backbone. Easy to drink and a big plus is that it doesn’t have the medicinal syrupy fell that I hate in a lot of Xmas beers.

On tap gravity keg from the Huber Haus. Chestnut color. Medium thick ecru colored head and low carbonation. Roasted flavor up front with very little malt sweetness. Strong finishing tartness. Leaves much to be desired.

On tap at Tyler’s in Durham. Medium to dark brown with smallish head. Typical bready German malt. Just a tad bit of spice. Nothing much going on here. Boring.

(Monk’s Christmas) 16.9 oz Grolsch style flip top- Pours dark amber with a pretty good head and below average lacing, aroma is not great, smells like a mass produced pale lager. The taste is better, there is definite roasted caramel malt, very easy to pour down the throat, the aroma is the weakest part of this otherwise decent brew.

500 ml bottle. Dark amber beer. Small head, roasted aroma. Body is rather thin. Tastes malty with a hint of chocolate. I can taste a little bit of smokiness too. Very drinkable.
