Flip-top bottle labeled Monk’s Christmas. Pours chestnut brown with a 2-finger light tan head, with nice retention. Aromas are nutty malt, cocoa, caramel, and a hint of red fruit. Flavor is rich, smoky wood, cocoa, and some slightly oaky toffee notes. Medium carbonation and nearly creamy. Tasty beer; enjoyed with smoked venison sausage...Mmmm...

Bottle, bought @ Bierzweg.de.
Pours clear chestnut with a small, frothy, off-white head. Aroma is sweet, light caramel, some liqourice, grass and a hint of chocolate. Highish carbonation, dry and light mouthfeel. Flavour is mild sweet, some toasted caramel, softly roasted. A bit of chocolate. Good malty and grassy bitterness. Nicely drinkable.

The pour is a translucent, dark crimson color with a moderately full, rocky, pillowy, off-white head which is somewhat lasting and leaves soapy lace. The nose is simple but pleasant with faint cocoa, slight roast, and lots of dark breads. The flavor is similar with husky grains, very yeasty breads, slightly barnyardy, and some light roast. The palate is more than moderate, lively, crisp, and slightly creamy. The finish is still a bit barnyardy, grainy, and doughy. Almost like being at the farm with the barnyard notes and intense grains, but still the palate really keeps the beer together. Not sure why they call it "Monk’s Christmas" when it shares no similarities to a Belgian beer?

Bottle 50 cl from Bier-Bienne (CH). Brown with generous foam and aromas of malt, toffy and chocolate. The taste is soft, sweetened, rather round, with chocolate, cream, toast, brown sugar and note of walnut. Beer supple, refreshing, low in bitterness but perfect with a salad with walnuts, cheese and .. croutons.

500ml bottle in a stem glass. Pours deep brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of nutty and caramel malts plus a very light hop note. Flavor the same. Average texture. Not bad but not great.

A Christmasy dunkel beer was a nice addition to my sampler tray. The daily tap special at Holy Grale, this would have been worth a full pint if I would have had more time. If you are lucky enough to be in the area do not miss whatever German drafts they have at the time.

Aroma / Appearance - The body looks like a glass of warm apple cider. Malty caramel apples add a sweet nutty texture. This isn’t complex but it is very pleasing.

Flavor / Palate - The taste of fresh apple cider chased with a bit of nuttiness opens well. A dry finish works its way to the back of the throat. One weakness is that over times it does not really improve. It might have been the handling in the way to the Midwest; I would love to try some beers in this style and the other Germanic ones at the source.

Dark brown colour with tiny off-white head. Aroma of roasted malts, little hops and some caramel notes. Similar are flavours. Medium body, low carbonation and bitterness. Drinkable but still not superlative.
