Pours a hazy caramel color with very small white head and minimal lacing. Caramel, malt, and bread aroma. Sweet coffee/chocolate flavor. Medium bodied with very little carbonation and a very smooth finish. Somewhat watery, but not a bad beer.

UPDATED: AUG 8, 2010 weissenohe monk’s fest marzen, 500ml, bottle conditioned. a treat to find such a thing. into a ceramic mug stolen from a zoigl stube. vienna and munich malt nose (toffee, caramel, honey, vanilla - mild). yeast seems to impart some fruit-forward esters in the aroma (red apple skin, marachino cherry, overripe pear and grape). apple and grape-juice sweetness up front is held inside loosely by a medium-light body and light to low natural carbonation. I think my biggest complaints are lack of crispness (the grape and plastic sugar quality seems to mute what crispness there is) and the mild/low carbonation (like many british bottles). not that I want more effervescence in something like a marzen, but I want carbonation in a form other than lifeless. that with a crisp malt edge and a touch less sweetness would have me smitten. as it stands in bottle form it just isn’t anything close to a great beer.

500 ml. bottle. Pours a thin short lived off white head, over a slightly hazy, many particled, amber (SRM 8) body.....nose is heavy with malt, cereal (Grapenuts), toffee/ caramel.....taste is heavy cereal/malt to start, then slight spice bitterness to finish, dry throughout.....mouth feel is medium, carbonation low. This is a fairly typical example of the style with the malts dominating throughout. BJCP 6/2/13/4/6

500ml bottle (Alko, Tallinn)
Golden brown, tight head. Really rich grainy, slightly husky aroma, a few orangezest and other fruity esters there too. Pleasant carbonation. The aroma was good preparation for the taste, in the mouth there’s a lovely deep bitter presence in the retronasals, and then on swallowing you realise this is jam-packed full of grainy malts, a really full marzen. And I don’t mean ’malts’ as in sugar, like fucked up US beers, I mean the malted grains - this is actually quite dry. The bitterness gives clues that there’s some roastiness too, and in the finish I even get a cocoa-like roasted hint (though perhaps more kamatahvelly than real chocolate). Full flavoured and thirst quenching - that’s what a beer should be like.
