DerWeg (748), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Apr 8, 2005 Updated: Apr 1, 2008Pours pale orange-yellow, a vanishing head with big fizzy bubbles. Light malt sweetness yet somewhat empty tasting and not much aroma; some grassy hops linger in the finish. I want to give all this brewer’s beers a chance, the Russian Stout is great. This one seems trying to be thin and fairly clean but is too delicate maybe. A refreshing lawnmower beer -- not really a best bitter, is it?? ** RATING ADDENDNUM ** enjoyed on CASK at CEST WHAT Toronto. Okay, here is a decent Brit-style session bitter that was quite drinkable, and fought to compete with the burger I ate at the same time. It was better than the bottled water version, but I’d have to drink several to see what the fuss is about. Formerly 5 / 3 / 5 / 3 / 8. Points added for being at least somewhat charming. True no-frills comfort beer. Goldorak (439), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Dec 20, 2004 Sampled on tap at the Manx in Ottawa.
Pale copper colored, off white head. Decent grainy, hop aroma.
Tasted rusty at first, I suspect the tap lines for that, but mellowed out into a smooth, yet nondescirpt taste of mild caramel and faint hop bitterness. Not bad, but I’ve had better. beerhugger (541), Oshawa, Ontario, Canada Nov 10, 2004 This is an OK beer but has been tamed down over time. Cask conditioned amber beer with light hops and bready malts. Expec ted more of substance in the aroma and a slightly bitter finish would have been nice too. Not terrible, just not memorable. OKBeer (1159), Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada Oct 17, 2004 341 ml bottle from pintbypint. Copper colour with a mostly diminishing fizzy off-white head. Leafy hops, caramel, and bready aroma. Light bread and caramel malts, with a "green hop" bitter finish. Medium bodied, soft and quenching mouthfeel. dirkules (613), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 25, 2004 Updated: Oct 1, 2004Amber pour, hop infused with an orange aroma and a crisp palatte. This is enough to warrant at least a 3 in my books. argo0 (6861), Washington DC, USA Sep 20, 2004 (draft) Clear amber body with small off-white head. Aroma is medium sweet, some smoke, light orange. Taste is medium sweet, malty, some orange-fruity, light smoke. Light-medium body, moderately fizzy, some acidity. pintbypint (1002), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Sep 15, 2004 341ml brown bottle. Poured orange/gold, capped with a small white head. Fruity aroma. Good malts, some caramel notes, finishes with some good hop biterness and orange notes. AlchemistZ (493), Richmond, Virginia, USA Sep 4, 2004 This ale has a beautiful copper color (subtle orange/gold). The head when poured collapsed quickly and is the color of polished bone. Aroma was wonderful with caramel, earth, milk, and sweet, spicey, tropical hops. Flavor is rich malt but some wet basement and spicy/dry character. Profile is exceptional with a great underpinning of bitterness that take hold just past mid-palate, then fades into an orangey malt finish. Overall, well done but the wet basement in the flavor profile really threw me. Excuse the low rating, maybe I had a old/bad bottle.
