This IPA poured a deep amber, slightly cloudy colour with a big, frothy, light tan head. Medium lacing. To the nose there are scents of malt, light caramel and grassy hopps with a splash of citrus. First sip was very flavourful with a nice medium hopp flavour and slightly roasted malts. Flavours of citrus, grass and toast. Finish is mildly bitter with hop flavour lingering.

Released June 17, 2012. 16 oz can from the brewery, served in a tulip glass. Pours clear copper with a moderate beige head that fades to a thin cover and leaves a moderate amount of fine lace. The nose has nutty, grainy malts with grassy, spicy hops and a touch of earth. The flavour is moderately bitter throughout with grass, resin and just a hint of citrus. Sorachi Ace and Amarillo are most prominent, along with Nugget. Cascade must just be a hint. Nutty, biscuity malts complement but are surpassed towards the end. The finish is long and bitter with a hint of spice. On the palate, it is medium in body with a chewy texture and soft carbonation. Overall, I was impressed with some aspects of this beer, but somehow it failed to come together as it could have. It is heavy on the bittering hops but could really benefit from an additional kick in the aroma department. The malts are quite nice, complex and with an English quality that suits the roots of the style. Not many IPAs aim for this ABV, but it makes for a nicely sessionable ale. I hope future batches are a bit more aromatic--it could really become a winner! 2012-07-13

The first thing I notice about this beer is it’s colour. Far and away the darkest IPA I’ve tried to date. Dark amber with a thin tan head. Aroma is pine and citrus with a hint of caramel. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavour is well balanced between sweet caramel malt, and citrusy hops, not quite grapefruit citrus.

Grey Cup 2012. Cool tap handle demands a pint. Unfortunately the aroma and flavour tend towards vegetable. Strong malt base. Vegetable is better than boots.

July 6, 2012 - with blankboy, gregclow, jercraigs, mabel & tupalev. 473ml can c/o tupalev (dated Jun 17/2012). Clear and bubbly coppery amber with a smallish foamy quick-diminishing head. Aroma is a little vegetal, but some vague herbal bitterness (6-). Taste is a little metallic up-front, otherwise simple grain backbone with an increasing herbal bitterness. Average body, good carbonation, it gets a little harsh as it builds on the palate, and the bitterness is pretty generic.

can. Pours copper colour, small white head. Aroma isn’t very strong, citrusy hops. Taste is more hoppy than malts, a little astringent. Meh.

473ml label free silver can from the brewery. Pours a hazy amber, with an oak coloured head. The nose is pretty thin. Biscuity malt, resinous hops, soapy notes, and grapefruit all show up, but they’re keeping a low profile. The taste is grapefruity hops that disappear into bitterness pretty quick. More biscuity malt, with some nice caramel notes, vanilla, and a sort of eucalyptus bitterness in the finish.

On tap at Volo. A decent colour, a dark golden yellow with an orange hue, lasting head. Medium bodied, very little hop aroma. Decent drinkability but just passable IPA. Some off notes, more flavour from hops would be appreciated.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2012 8/15/2012 Very malty with cool minerally-earthy notes and bready toffee. Not very hoppy. Odd but good. / ADD NOTES 3 SEPT. Dark clear gold look with paler highlights, small white head, good body and palate. This can from the brewery seems to have some nice citrus and earthy herbal hop. Aroma farm-like with horse. A work in progress? Long bitter finish with some lemons, not bad so far.
