3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A damn fine strong ale. A bit of sour apples and alcohol in the aroma. A complex maltiness hits you right up front followed by a bit of alcohol and a bit of hops and alcohol in the finish. The color is a dark red, almost mahogany and the carbonation is damn near perfect by my standards (light to fair medium).

3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
Sweet smell, almost like banada or pear. Darker brown in colour, fizzy & decent head. Weak initial taste with a kick of alcohol. Sweet but unidentifiable. Overall decent but nothing special.

3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
UPDATED: JUL 27, 2008 Yet another over-rated beer from this very average brewery. This is up there with Tankhouse for an allegedly flavourable ale, but both are thin, lacking malts, depths of flavours and seem almost too fizzy for an english ale. Give me a Fullers or John Bull any day or even a Belgian ale for big alcohol content with way more flavour. Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale has more alcohol & way more flavour than this. This does have caramel and is sweet, but needs more malts to round it out.

Dark tawny color, slight haze. Little to no head.Faint aroma of malt and treacle/molasses. Flavor is malt and molasses up front, very little hops, in the finish. Alcohol comes through in the mid-taste. Surprisingly thin for darkness and strength.

A very nice ale indeed. Nutty with a chocolate nose and tiny hits of coffee blended in with subtle chocolate last through the entire bottle. For the price I got this at, it’s amazing. Truly, one of Canada’s finer beers.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 14, 2008 Dark brown body with a minimal tan coloured head. A sweet chocolate smell in the aroma jives with some fruity esters. The flavour shows much of the same, but with more of an emphasis on the fruity end mixed in with caramel. The alcohol packs a nice kick, but does not dominate. Fairly full bodied. A very decent beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
UPDATED: AUG 23, 2010 Seems to me that the formula has been changed recently. Creamier and less bubbly. The aroma is dried fruit, nuts and malt. The taste is creamy, nutty malt, reminds me of dopplebocks. Colour is dark brownish red with foamy tan head that thins quickly. Smooth, hides the alcohol well. Good blend with no ingredient overpowering the others. One of the best locals available at our beer stores.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: NOV 19, 2007 Looks splendid. A nice tan head rests atop a deep clear amber. Effervescence looks great. Aroma is bready, caramel, and walnuts. The flavour contains subtly roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, and some hops. Lots of chocolate. A little alcohol present. Good lacing. Dry finish. Side note: Good value. A flavourful, interesting beer for $36 a case, making it cheaper than a lot of the club soda lagers available around here.
